We’ve discussed what’s appropriate at public gym showers, strange denizens of the pool, etc. This isn’t so much a question of etiquette as a “WTF?”
Last night, a rather older gentleman (I’d give him late 60s based on slowness of movement and sagging body parts) was in a shower stall a few down from mine. The stalls are separated by walls, but there are not curtains over them. There is a narrow walkway in front of the stalls, all the way to the end, with a handrail the whole way (to hang towels, shampoo, etc).
There was a can of Barbasol shaving cream on the rail. As I reached for my towel, this older fellow reached for the Barbasol. He proceeded to lather it on his butt cheeks. He didn’t use it anywhere else, and he didn’t seem to have a razor.
Is this some kind of old-guy wisdom that nobody ever taught me? Does it moisturize? Prevent chafing? Prevent ingrown hairs? Just feel good?
His locker also happened to be across from mine, and his butt was clearly not shaved (though not ape-ishly hairy). What gives?
(I’m not a weirdo – at least not for this incident alone.)
Your candor is admirable, but please be prepared for the standard homophobic responses.
Old people have some quirky tricks when it comes to bodily care, but they’re often reliable. Got a black eye . . . throw some raw meat on it. Brush your teeth with pure baking soda for that all-day gag and pearly-white smile. Perhaps Barbasol has some soothing effect on hemorrhoids. Don’t knock it 'til you’ve tried it.
Well first you admit to watching some guy lather up his a$$. Then you admit that you checked him out afterwards to see how much hair he had on his butt. You’ve also mentioned how you’ve checked out his entire body (“sagging body parts”) and watched how he walks. Even though there is a wall between him and you.
Now that I’ve summarized this I think I will just move onto another thread.

Funny, after reading your summary I forgot what the question was.
At least he didn’t lather up and proceed to shave ever inch of his body with a disposable razor. I’ve witnessed that a few times, didn’t really stick around to watch, but when you have shaving cream covering every part of your body that typically grows hair, you know whats coming… I mean, to me, the man-scaping should be left to the privacy of your own home.
To the question above, hell if I know, maybe it just feels nice.
he’s probably saw you checking him out and thought, “hmm, what can i do? i know, i’ll put shaving cream on my ass.”
or maybe he was all out of whipped cream so he had to settle for a barbasol bikini.
When I was a nurse in the ICU (years ago), we’d add shaving cream to the bedbath water. It helped cut the body odor. I have no idea if that was his plan. Just one possibility.
That’s nothin’. I saw a guy in the gym locker room once with brightly-colored zinc oxide (or so it seemed) applied strategically at the juncture of the two halves of his ass.
