Neighbors, Pit Bulls, Kids and cops

Disclaimer #1: I’m a dog person, always have been and have 2 dogs now.
Disclaimer #2: We have a fenced in (chainlink) back yard, but even at that our lab occasionally gets out.

So my wife and I have been in our house for about 6-7 years now. Had dogs the whole time.
We have neighbors on both sides of our house and neighbors across the street in a quiet neighborhood.
On our left our neighbors include a fall down drunk guy that literally comes home from work every night around 6 and is usually wasted. Seriously, he fell down last fall getting out of his car and laughed. He’s about 50 or so but he’s a nice guy, always talks (usually in a slur that you can barely understand) and chats up with us if we are both outside.
His wife is a bitch. In 7 years she has never waved, talked, said hi or acknowledged me or my wife or our kids. I know she’s a bitch because I golfed in a league where her sister was the owner of the course and she said she’s a bitch so it’s not just me. The wife has two sons, both mid to late 20’s still living at home, both skinny white kids trying to pretend they are gangsters from the hood. The oldest son is in jail for something right now, not sure what, the younger son is an ex marine and quite the hot head. Came home drunk one night last fall and was beating the shit out of his girlfriends car and screaming he’s gonna kill her, cops are up at around 3 in the morning and diffuse the situation. In an otherwise calm and peaceful neighborhood these people are the turds we just can’t flush.

So the neighbors have dogs too. The parents have a wiener dog and a springer. They are pretty harmless although the springer and wiener dog do dig at our fence trying to get in to play with our dogs. One time the wiener dog made it through and our babysitter took it back and the bitch lady screamed at her for ‘enticing’ her dog under the fence! She seriously threatened to call the cops on our babysitter because her dog dug into our yard! See, I told you she was a bitch.

The son, or sons, are fascinated with pitt bulls and have had up to 3-4 of them at any time. Right now they have 2. Their yard is not fenced in and they let them out without a leash and unattended. Last friday my lab starts going nuts and there one is on our front porch running around and the bitchy lady is trying to get ahold of it to get it back home.

My wife and I have 4 kids, ages 1, 3, 10 and 13. I enjoy playing outside with them including playing in our driveway letting the little ones ride their tricycles or Barbie jeeps and so on. Yet my wife and I are fearful that one of the pittbulls may get out and with our kids being used to and not afraid of dogs, well who knows what might happen. They may be the nicest dogs in the world but it’s a chance we don’t want to take. So lately we play outside until the neighbors come home then go in the back yard or inside for fear of one of their dogs coming over.

So at work yesterday I say something to one of the supervisors of the township we live in as our office is right next to theirs and we talk frequently. He says something to a township cop who calls and talks to my wife. Turns out 3-4 other neighbors have also recently called about these dogs so the cop says he’s going to go talk to them and tell them they’ve had multiple complaints and to keep the dogs under control and so on. The cop assures us it will be made clear that these were anonymous calls. Sure enough as I’m headed home from work my wife calls and says the son came over pounding on our door telling her it was a mistake to call the cops and we’re in for a fight and things are going to get interesting and our dogs are mean and growl at him (we have a lab and a shitzu) and so on. So now I call the cop, he apparently calls the kid and says it wasn’t us that complained but it was MULTIPLE neighbors and going over threatening my wife was a mistake. He calls my wife and tells her about this and says all the kid kept saying was our dogs aren’t on leashes (they are fenced in) and he’s going to call the cops every time they are out in our backyard evein if it is fenced in because technichally they should be leashed and will call every time they get out and so on. The cop tells him to worry about his own dogs and leave it at that.

So now it looks like our peaceful neighborhood is headed for a good old fashioned neighborly feud. Boy this will be a fun summer…

I guess that explains the fall-down drunk guy. I’d drink (more) if I was in that family.

That surely sucks. I get angry just reading about your situation. Too bad the whloe familay, dogs and humans, can’t be euthanized. The world would be better for it.

sucks. I would probably look to unite the neighbors in the area via email.

I’m with Johnny… nice guy needs booze to make it through his day hah.

Shitty situation. In the end, the real “losers” may be the doggies.

My neighborhood has done to the dogs. Four next door, two behind-right, one directly behind, one to the left. The two worst are two doors down, who can see me when I’m in the yard, and bark constantly.

If it wasn’t for all the fucking dogs in my neighborhood maybe I could have some peace and quiet. Maybe I could enjoy gardening. But…hell no…

Someday I’m going to buy 100 acres in the middle of the country and build me a house smack in the middle of it, just so I can sit outside and listen to the birds without hearing barking.

Obviously, I can’t offer any advice. Have a nice summer…

Ahh yes…every neighborhood has their Bumpuses.

Ours moved away recently. (not all foreclosures are bad)

Good luck, you don’t have many cards when dealing with people without much to lose.

Document everything.
Seriously.

Get yourself a few of these and hook them up to your PC to save the pics if need be. You may need the evidence…

Unfortunately there really isn’t much you can do outside being prepared for anything and waiting for something to happen.

Sorry to hear about your plight. Keep an eye on your dogs even if it means installing a camera just to protect them/you.

Have you thought about keeping a “diary” of sorts? I saw a website once where they were essentially blogging about the idiot neighbours next door (hilarious story, by the way) which they approached in a humourous way, but it could be a good way to keep a record of what happens. If it does turn ugly down the road, you’ll have a great record of how things developed.

Good luck! Fortunately I haven’t seen any neighbourly feuds in my area of Vancouver. Oh, except the gang war that’s going on with dozens and dozens of targetted shootings. But other than that, we’re peaceful

We had a similar dog fued with our neighbors. Started with my rescued Golden Retriever running across our yard, stopping at the edge and barking at his wife. Yes, our bad because we didn’t have full control of the leash but the dog never left our yard. Wife over reacted and husband called animal control. Huge blow up resulting with the neighbor knocking on our front door and confronting my husband. Not cool. About a year later, we haven’t talked or looked at each other and our dogs are always on leash, they adopt a puppy. This breaks the ice between the wife and myself so we are OK but the husbands are still in a major fued. The dog turns out to be a nightmare. It would rush across OUR yard at our dogs, who were on leash. It would chase me and bark when I ran by. It was never on leash. I ran into the husband one day an said something. Since then the dog has been inside or onleash. I have maintained a civil relationship with both of them but the husbands still can’t get along. This past winter I saw the husband on a running trail and he asked about the dead Land Rover in our yard. I gave it to him, just to get it our of our driveway.

So, peace has been restored. Took 5 years.

I dunno about you, but I’m pretty happy about the gang war lol. For every guy shot, that’s one less gangster on the street. And they are sticking to their targets, rather than blasting up a whole restaurant .

I agree, as long as it stays that way… but I guess when one goes down, someone else will take his/her place, and possibly have worse aim! I live in East Van with three of them within 6-8 blocks from home. Also got a note in my mailbox yesterday that there’s a community meeting about a particular troubled house around here the cops know about. My question is if everyone is so “in the know” about this damn house, why are we forced to get together as a community to see how we can help solve the problem? Bust their asses!!! Maybe the world needs a little more vigilante justice. Or a superhero.

In Madison WI twice in the past few weeks unleashed pit bulls have attacked other dogs AND their owners. The first dog was literally torn to shreads (and died) and owner bitten severely on the arm. Pit bull owner was cited and the pit bull euthanized. Second attack, the smaller dog survived but a good samaritan was bitten beating the pitbull with his fists. Multiple citations. If I were the OP I would put barbed wire on my fence and keep a baseball bat handy. All dogs are capable of bitting, but a pit bull can kill someone or maim them for life. I have had Labs most of my life and while they will bark loudly at strangers they are never aggressive. I would fear for my childrens’ safety if I were you.

Pits are a big problem here, as well. We have multiple attacks each year that make the news, many more bites that do not. I think there’s a bit of hysteria there, but every thug-life wannabe around here has a couple pits. They never seem to be able to keep them in the yard. The latest attack was an old lady taking her garbage out, when her neighbor’s two pits (male and female – he was breeding them) got out and ran her down, attacked her. Neighbors pulled them off, the lady ended up losing a leg. The owner was charged with a couple of misdemeanors, dogs destroyed. This scenario seems to repeat itself every 4-6 months here. The lady two doors down from me has a pit, it’s a real sweet dog though!

My neighborhood has done to the dogs. Four next door, two behind-right, one directly behind, one to the left. The two worst are two doors down, who can see me when I’m in the yard, naked, and bark constantly.

If it wasn’t for all the fucking dogs in my neighborhood maybe I could have some peace and quiet. Maybe I could enjoy gardening naked. But…hell no…

Someday I’m going to buy 100 acres in the middle of the country and build me a house smack in the middle of it, just so I can sit outside naked and listen to the birds without hearing barking.

Obviously, I can’t offer any advice. Have a nice summer…
I don’t know, it just struck me as funny…

Really sucks about your situation. One son in jail, looks like their other son is headed that way this summer.

Another option is that you can go postal on the kids, just make sure there are no witnesses or video. I felt I had to do that once, guy backed me into a corner, was a real asshole. I got him on the phone, and told him he better sleep with one eye open from now on, because one night he is going to wake up sucking air through his throat. Hung up immediatley after that, gave him no chance to throw back at me, and never heard from him again…

Otherwise just take your chances with the legal route, and hope for the best. One of those dogs grabs one of your young kids, I expect you will do exactly what I just outlined, only after the fact…Good luck…

No doubt, serious red flags, and it was disquieting just reading the scenario your post lays out. I guess you’re in a better place overall by the bad neighbors knowing that multiple neighbors have complained and that the cops are in the know to some extent. Sounds like you guys are doing the prudent thing in keeping yourselves and kids fenced when the dogs might be out, but how messed up is that? I wish you the best.
