Need help with removing bar end shifter

I want to exchange my aerobar extensions, so I’m trying to remove the shimano bar end shifters. The problem I’m having is that the bolt inside the bar is really stuck. Anybody has a tip how to get it loose? (and yes I tried cursing)
Thanks!

its reverse. righty loosey

Put the hex head allen wrench in then slip something over the allen extension to give you more leverage. One of three things will happen, the part loosened the hex strips, or the whole asssembly spins in the aerobar.

Chances are it will loosen.

Styrrell

What Jack said. That’s the most common error. The first time I did it, I damn near permanently embedded the thing in the extension by cranking down on it what I thought was “lefty loosey” but is actually “lefty tighty.”

Thanks all! Unfortunately it is still stuck. I’m gonna try again what Styrrel said, just have to find something better to slip over the allen key.

Like everyone said. the bolt inside Shimano’s bar end (TT) shifters is RIGHTY LOOSEY. It may take a while since your previous attempts to loosen this thing ended up tightening it too much. Drip a lot of WD 40 inside (where the bolt is) and give it a day or too. The WD-40 will loosen it and then give it another try. Remember RIGHTY LOOSEY.

.

Thanks for the wd 40 tip. Unfortunately I damaged the bolt when I tried to loosen it today again. So i probably have no other choice than buy new bar end shifters or ride my straight extensions a little bit longer.

If I remember right, the bolt is standard metric hex head hardened fastener. You should be able to find one at your local Ace Hardware. Home Depot might sell them, but probably not the grade 5.8 that you need.

So all you need to do is unthread your shifter, cut your extensions aft of the shifter, cut the remaining tube off the shifter, replace the bolt, and reinstall in the correct extensions. easier than it sounds, but it can be done. A dremel tool would help a lot.

Sound doable. Thanks, I will try it.
