Here’s the low down, $500 dollars to spend on a wheelset, would you:
Buy a set of used Spinergy PBO Tilliums or something else? Why?
Background: I am racing IMLP in 2008. I have a OEM set of Ritchey wheels from a 2002 Cervelo One. I have a buddy who recently purchased a new bike and can’t use 650 wheels anymore, so he’s going to sell the Tilliums. Also, I know the condition of the wheelset is excellent, but can’t find any info on Ebay for setting the price (niether of us are sure on a fair price).
I don’t know much of anything about the Tilliums but if you like them you could offer him $425, then take the $75 left over and order a CH Aero Cover from Wheelbuilder.com.
or
just buy a cover for your current spoked rear wheel and watch the classifieds for a Zipp or Hed front wheel - you can often pick up a used one in the $400 range.
mavic ksyrium elite may be a good choice for imlp, not the lightest, but they have bladed spokes and pretty good bearings. They are also pretty tough. I would think they would be pretty good for a hilly course like that.
Just throughout the years I’ve read a bunch of problems with several Spinergy models. Also they’re out of business now (I think!?), so not a smart decision to buy it.
In 650c is REALLY easy to find a good deal on used wheels. For around $500 you can find some HED’s for example. The wheelset that I have, CX front and DEEP rear, was under $300.
