Just did a 3 hour ride. Had one concentrated bottle with 900 total calories consisting of 300 calories worth of EFS electrolyte mix (3 scoops) and 600 calories of Carbo-Pro (6 scoops). I do 300 calories per hour plus about 16 ounces of water per hour.
Now the nutrition holds me over, but it doesn’t hit the 'hunger / thirst spot" in my system. The best way I can explain “hitting this spot” is when you drink a huge glass of orange juice or apple juice after vigorous activity. That feeling that you get when the juice “hits the spot” and you get that “ahhhh” feeling. I don’t get that when taking in my nutrition. Again, it holds me over, but I don’t feel ‘refreshed’ by it.
Any idea why I still feel this “hunger / thirst spot” even though I am taking in 300 cals per hours (electrolyte / carb)?
Any suggestions on how to “hit the spot”?
Try bringing along something solid to semi-solid. Lots of people use gels or bars.
I am currently on a fig newton craze. I eat 2-3 cookies (?) at the 1 hour mark and again at the 90 min mark. Each is about 55 calories and it craves the hunger pang for the duration.

Thanks. I always bring a few gels with me in case I run out of liquid nutrition. Maybe I will swallow one down when I get that hungry feeling.
I run 2 scoops and 3 scoops of the same mix on the down tube, water in the aero bottle and then gel (homemade for training).
Every 15 minutes, I take a shot of gel, shot of the EFS/Carbo pro drink, then chase it with water. I did a 3 hr ride Saturday and found that I was NOT craving anything when I finished the ride…which is abnormal for me (pacing was better though).
I’ll admit sometimes I do crave gatorade or something else, but I have problems stomaching them.
Maybe try Cliff Shots or Gu Blocks? I don’t rely on them for my nutritional needs, but do occasionally carry them on long rides to take care of that “need to chew on something” and/or “need something in my stomach” feeling.
The other option is to just learn to live with it. That’s my approach on race days; although I know I’m getting all the calories I need via liquid nutrition my stomach still get’s that empty/hungry feeling. I’ve learned to just ignore it when I have to.
What are you eating before your ride?
