I’m thinking of riding to sac and taking the train back to my car that I plan to park at/near the Martinez Amtrack train station.
Anyone ever done it? Do you have any suggested routes or roads to avoid? I’d prefer flat terrain so I can spend several hours feeling the love of the areo position.
Not riding the route for a few months, but I want to start early on the planning part.
I think Mapquest or google directions offers the ability to select “avoid highways”…obviously the results won’t be perfect, but it’d be a good place to start at least…and you may be the first person ever doing that exciting route!
I can’t give you step by step directions… but I have ridden from 2nd Street in Benicia up alongside 680 to Suisun Valley Rd. Benicia Bike Club http://www.beniciabicycleclub.org/ uses it as part of their regular ride. Parts of it also are used by the Davis Bike Club during their Foxy’s Fall Century http://www.bikely.com/.../Foxy-s-Fall-Century which is on really empty rural roads and ends you up in Davis. From Davis it’s super-easy to go through town any number of ways across the Yolo Causeway, through a shitty neighborhood, and into old town Sacramento. Parts hilly at the beginning, but flat and windy once you hit the country. Nice epic ride.
I’ve also ridden on the River Rd. (Hwy 160 through the delta) off Hwy 4. There’s no shoulder most of the way, but it’s a very nice ride and the traffic is relatively friendly unless it’s a busy holiday weekend. I’m just not sure there’s a bike lane on the bridge on hwy 160 over the delta. S. River Rd. runs right into Jefferson Blvd. into West Sac… it’s flat the entire way, but probably not too good for aerobars on stretches of it. And getting to that bridge could be troublesome.
Edit: confirmed you can get across the Antioch bridge http://www.bayareabikes.org/corner.htm#Antioch I would do that route. Work your way over to Willow Pass Rd. and through Gun Point and Antioch and Pittsburg.
