Need a beginner bike

How are you guys doing? I am knew to the sport wanting to compete in some local triathlons. I have no idea in what kind of bike to buy looking for something cheap but good. please help with any suggestions.

For your first tri any bike will do as long as it fits. No point in spending much money until you’ve decided that you like the sport.

If purchasing, first off, get a road bike and learn how to ride by joining a local roadie group. For tris you can fit it with shorty road geometry design aero bars such as the Profile Jammer GT’s or a small size Syntace C2. Add clipless pedals and you’re all set to rock n roll.

There are a number of very good bikes on the market and the best deals are usually to be found second hand. The most important thing is that the bike is a good fit. To learn the basics of what makes a good fit read this article

What is your approx. budget?

Greetings, If you are interesed in a used beginner level bike I might have something for you. I have used this bike for 1/2 dozen duathlons (including a 1/2 iron distance race) and a couple of tri’s. It depends on what size you need. You can email me direcly at: Chris.tuey@perceptive.com or call me at: 720.341.8771

ideal way to go would be an inexpensive road bike. felt and giant are reputed to make excellent road bikes for under a $1,000. as long as you get a good fit, you could do a race on any distance with it. you can always upgrade later to a dedicated tri bike, and still retain the road bike for most of your training miles.

Thanks for replying cerveloguy. I am a student and really don’t work so my budget is not that much i was thinking somewhere in between the $500-$600 dollar range. Thanks again

“somewhere in between the $500-$600 dollar range.”

Have a good look at the Giant OCR range. It’s a good bike for that price. My wife raced her first two years on a Giant OCR-3 and had several AG wins/placings in our local area sprint tris.

Felt also makes some good bikes in that price range.
