Neat site for the do it yourself bike repair crowd

I posted this in another unrelated thread today and thought it might be beneficial for some of the people who choose to bypass the LBS for their bike work. There are several options, but the first one is my personal choice as it seemed the toughest.

Sure beats dropping $3 bills + on a big name stand!

I am all about cheap…but more so function. You should never ever clamp carbon, certainly not carbon that is not round. You also should not suspend carbon nor thin wall frames - not on a stand, nor on a trunk or hitch mount rack. I am glad to see that site - but could easily come up with better options (that would all cost more) and not be worth my trading out my shop quality Park stand(s) that I have in my home.

I guess I"m missing something here. The stand clamps on to the seatpost? Oh you mean if you have a carbon seatpost? Gotcha. I’m old school and have a beat down Truvativ XR…def not carbon.

Off topic from the original thread but you were talking about how to secure a carbon frame. I am looking to by a hitch mount bike rack for my car and have two carbon bikes. What should I be looking for?

For a number of reasons, the tray mount racks are great and are what I would buy.

These let your wheels sit in a tray and there is a hold down bar that presses down either on the front tire or across the top tube.

However, I am of the opinion that it’s alarmist nonsense to say that you shouldn’t suspend a carbon bike from padded supports. If you prefer to hang your bike by the top tube on your car rack you won’t be sorry…well, not for that reason.

Something to hold it by the wheels, or the fork (as in roof rack). I have seen many a carbon frame cracked by a trunk mount that compresses the carbon on the top tube.

i do my work with the bike standing in the trainer stand, but with the roller screwed away from the wheel. That way i dont have one more thing like astand crowding my basement (but i do have to work while sitting on the floor)

Those are some creative methods in that link but I agree with the above statement.
Use what you already have and just be a little creative.
I’ve used the trainer to hold the bike. Back wheel or front wheel depending on what needs addressing. It works well.
I’ve also backed my car in the garage and used my hitch mount bike rack to hold the bike by the top tube while I worked on it.
As a matter of fact, this is how I wash my bike too.
