Navicular Stress Fracture (1)

Hello,

Anyone here had a stress fracture of this kind? What were the recovery times? Still able to bike and swim? Any special recovery techniques for it?

Just got back from a sports doctor and this is what he suspects. X-rays were negative, which they often are, and I’m being set up for a bone scan. He mentioned something about being in a cast (walking boot etc) for up to 6 weeks if it is a navicular stress fracture. If you’ve had this, is that about right? I’m just a little worried as I have IM Wis in Sept!

Thanks for any input!

BB

Navicular stress fx are notoriously slow to heal, sorry! Usually require non weightbearing and a cast, unlike other forefoot stress fractures (i.e. walking boot) as the bone has a poor blood supply.

Good luck!

I seem to recall one of our football players broke his Navicular when I was at Notre Dame. He did it at the begining of the season and was out for the entire season, because that bone is notoriously slow to heal. Sorry man.

Yeah that’s basically what the doctor said. Just wanted to get some ‘second’ opinions…

How about a removable cast that I can take off to cycle and swim? Would that be doable?

Thanks!

BB

No.

:frowning:

Ok, thanks for the (bad) news.

I guess I really shouldn’t have done that 1/2 Iron this weekend…

Oh dear.
I’ve had 3 sfx but never a navicular fx. Fingers crossed for you that the bone scan doesn’t have any hot spots… sfx are miserable things. Particularly if you can’t swim or bike :frowning:

(((hugs)))

Navicular stress fracture. Got one of those about twenty years ago. Was in the cast for six weeks. When I went back to running it came back. In the cast again. It took about 10-15 years before I had no pain. VERY slow to heal. Sorry.

TC - Thanks for the good thoughts!

Almost - Yikes, just what I wanted to hear. Did it hurt when you walked? How about when you swam?

Thanks!
