Nausea on the bike - help!

Last night I rode 65 miles and at mile 55, I started with stomach cramps, that developed into full blown nausea. I really felt sick, almost to the point of stopping. This has happened to me a couple of times in my preparation for IMLP.

I was on the bike for 4 hours and during that time consumed 800 calories in gu’s and a powerbar. I also had about 30 oz of water and about 30 oz of gatorade endurance. With the Gatorade included, I had about 1,000 calories in that four hour period.

I would appreciate any thoughts about why I felt so terrible. I thought I was executing my nutrition plan perfectly with a gu every 30 mins… a little power bar in between gu’s… washing gu’s down with water.

Short on fluid and particularly H20 with all that GU.

I’ll second CooterBob.

See the article on the main page regarding hydration. Here is a short quote:

"But you shouldn’t do the whole ride on just gel and fluid replacement. What the gel people don’t tell you, because they’re trying to be politic, is that you don’t need fluid replacement with gels. Gels are instead of, not in addition to, fluid replacement. You obviously need water, and the gel folks would stress taking in a lot of water. But variety is the spice of life, and fluid replacement should not be neglected. You’ll have too much solute, though, and not enough solvent, if you don’t take in a certain amount of clear water. "

I’d guess your water intake should have been much more, like double.

I was wondering if that was the case. I only drank a bottle and a half of water yet i consumed 1,000 calories.

Thanks. I’ll try more water on tomorrows long ride and hopefully that will settle things down.

In addition to insufficient fluid intake, it could also be you were short on sodium and/or other electrolytes.
