as I look out my window thinking about my planned 55min run this evening, I see that the wind is gusting up to 22 mph and weather.com tells me that it is a brisk 45 deg. Oh, and did I mention that it is also raining?
So as I think about that 55min run I have to wonder which is the lesser of two evils, Running on the treadmill for almost an hour, or running in the cold, wet darkness?
Cold wet dark. Rainy weather is some of my favorite to run in. I find that rainy and after dark keeps the streets quiet (no small feat in nyc) and helps me zone/zen out while running.
It’s been oddly warm here though, so I haven’t had to do much cold running…yet.
I don’t think running in the rain is evil or that 45 degrees is cold, so I’d go outside. You can always tell the people who run on treadmills in bad weather because they are the ones going “Wah Wah Wah” whenever it rains during a race.
I ran/rode outside too many years when I DON’T like to be cold/wet…falling on my arse in the ice etc. Cold wind really hurts my insides. Anyway, one day I thought, “why am I doing this?” To be tough? Something to prove? No… didn’t need to prove that I can handle the elements or that I have mental strength etc. Some days I just don’t want to go outside, so I don’t!!
I ran 6 outside after my CT ride this morning. It was about 40 degrees and drizzling. Not the greatest conditions, but at least it wasn’t dark. I am not looking forward to running tonight if it keeps raining. I’d run inside, but then I usually end up cutting my run short.
I should know better than to comment onthe weather here in MI, since it is now sunny out my window, making 45 deg look like I might just wear my shorts.
I guess I will have to make the call when it comes time to actually run.
You are right about running on the treadmill though, it is awfully hard to cut a 7 mile run short when you are 3.5 miles from home.
An hour on the treadmill is nothing, I wind up doing it atleast twice a week because of travel or weather. Just look at it as mental toughness training. Train the body and the mind!
Just throw on an extra skirt, and get outside!
But seriously, if you’re inside by mid November, you’ll be going nuts by February! The only thing that’ll get me inside this winter will be glare ice. Learned that lesson the hard way last year… 2 falls in 30 minutes

I’d much rather run in below-freezing than just-above-and-raining. My notion of the evil zone is below 40 and raining (i.e., typical November in MI); if the precip is solid, no problem.
Head outside. I ran 10 miles this morning in about 40 degree weather and a steady rain. I don’t run on the treadmill unless it is freezing rain, or unless I’m training for a hot southern triathlon.
It wasn’t really a brick this morning, just a transition run. I am trying to up my running frequency to offset the decline in volume due to the cold/dark/rain.
Also, I have been eating like crap since Kona, and with the holidays just around the corner, I don’t need to strap on too many extra lbs.
And I do have a couple more cyclocross races to go, including the state championships.
Get out and run! Last Friday I ran for an hour in the cold rain AND it was already dark out. I took my daughter in the running stroller (with winter cover)…she slept like a champ. I also took my dog (I attach his leash to an old belt)…he was fired up to get out of house…he was soaked, I was soaked…it was awesome.
Get outside and run. If the footing is unsure, like on a trail, then get a headlamp for safety. There’s no such thing as inclement weather, just improper dress for the conditions. Rime is only the beginning. The coolest thing is when your outer layer is Gortex and your inner layer is polypropylene and there’s a fleece middle, and you open up the gortex when you get in the door and a sheet of ice falls off the fleece and you had no idea it was there because you were perfectly warm the whole time.
