Spanish cyclist escapes severe injury May 9, 2005

SANTA MARIA DEL CEDRO, Italy (AFP) – Spaniard Alberto Lopez de Munain escaped a potentially fatal injury after crashing on the second stage of the Tour of Italy which

The Euskaltel rider fell spectacularly around 40km from the finish line of the 182 km stage after losing control of his bike when his front wheel made contact with a wheel in front of him.

On falling, the 33-year-old Spaniard’s head smacked a security barrier at the side of the road. He lost consciousness for a few moments and was immediately taken to hospital by ambulance.

Just seen it on the tv coverage. Scary stuff, he just went down on his rightside and smashed his head into the armco barrier and was out like a light.

Glad to hear he will survive, hopefully without any brain injury.

thank God he was wearing a helmet, if he didn’t he’d be dead for sure.

Watching the raw feed was very interesting. You get to see all the contact and sketchy stuff unedited. It’s pretty amazing that these crashes aren’t a lot more common.

Just shows you how good a bike handler even the average pro is !

Don’t get me wrong here, very unfortunate accident. I hope he recovers fully.

He had a hemet but it was the side of his head that hit the crash barrier. The helmet was only going to help him so much. He was very very lucky…
