East nashville is a very cool place (read, hip).
the city is fairly progressive and has a TON of stuff to do other than “country” stuff.
Large, low cost, good airport, good restaurants, 2 pro teams (hockey, NFL)
very nice people
Kick f’ing ass music scene of all genres.
this coming from a guy who lives and is from Knoxville, TN., btw.
Great place to live. No state income tax, but sales tax rates tend to be higher than some states. Great climate with the worst weather being January & February. I don’t live there, but I did attend college in nearby Murfreesboro so I am familiar with the general area.
On my short list of possible destinations when I bail out of CA.
Can you ride year round?
For the most part yes. There will be some snow days during Jan & Feb,but it normally doesnt hang around long. And there will be days where temps stay below freezing, but thats not generally the norm. You can easily ride 10 months out of the year for sure. I know alot of mountain bike riders that ride year round (personally I dont ride mtn bikes).
almost yr. round riding.
it varies year to year.
very little snow…sometimes.
lows in Jan/feb can be below 20, but not for often.
sales tax is 9.5% (low property taxes, and no state income tax makes up for this).
OK, they are flying us there in early November for 2.5 days What should I check out? I like bike racing, Belgian beer and real Italian food served by real Italian waiters.
East Nashville for sure, the vanderbuilt campus area, yazoo brewery (try the Hop Project)…
AVOID the opryland hotel, stay near downtown.

Thanks! We are submitting a form with our interests, so I’ll put these on it.
Any bike shops to recommend? Especially that may be tied to a race team?

and for the best restaurants just ask the locals. Last time my wife and I went, we just asked and the people are so nice. We ate at one rest., that was an old house that rocked. I will find out the name and ping back.
found it…the city house
best place I have eaten there. farm to table concept. lots of local stuff.
also check out the gulch. that is near the brewery.
and try benton’s bacon if any restaurant carries it.
Can you ride year round?
Last couple of years the Winter has been worse than before (at least that’s what the locals tell me). It snowed a bit at least twice las couple of Winters, with several weeks around freezing.
The worst thing about the snow is that the city basically shuts down for a week after it snows. Neighborhood streets are not plowed, which means that if it’s below freezing and you live on a hill, you’re stuck at home.
We were in Nashville in August, and before the trip I asked a similar question of the ST crowd. My thoughts:
We stayed northwest of the airport & it was about a 25 minute drive over to Trace Bikes. Too far to drive if you only want to visit a bike shop, but it’s also at the start of the 400+ mile Natchez Trace Parkway. And it’s next door to the semi-famous Loveless Cafe (very, very good BBQ).
We rode twice on the Trace whilst we were there - little to no traffic, very very good road conditions, rolling hills, random flocks of turkeys, and a few other cyclists. It (and lunch afterward) was worth the ride out. Another day we rode the rails/trails along the river, through the city, and around the football stadium. There is also a Wendesday night crit downtown, but I don’t know how late in the year they race.
Have fun.
Thanks much!
