WASHINGTON (AP) – NASA’s online contest to name a new room at the international space station went awry. Comedian Stephen Colbert won.
The name ‘‘Colbert’’ beat out NASA’s four suggested options in the space agency’s effort to have the public help name the addition. The new room will be launched later this year.
NASA’s mistake was allowing write-ins. Colbert urged viewers of his Comedy Central show, ‘‘The Colbert Report,’’ to write in his name. And they complied, with 230,539 votes. That clobbered Serenity, one of the NASA choices, by more than 40,000 votes. Nearly 1.2 million votes were cast by the time the contest ended Friday.
NASA reserves the right to choose an appropriate name. Agency spokesman John Yembrick said NASA will decide in April, but will give top vote-getters ‘‘the most consideration.’’
He’s got a minor league hockey mascot named after him, a spider, a bridge in Hungary, a turtle, a seal (one named for him and one for Jon Stewart), a Ben and Jerry’s ice cream flavor, a falcon, etc, etc.
If we aren’t careful, this will be the “Colbert Lavender Room” before too long.
Personally I think he should use his influence to make actual positive change rather than satisfying his own ego. I think it’s selfish and immature and he should be ashamed of himself, and if NASA were smart they’d also see that it was just a publicity stunt and ignore the votes for him.

And I think you should grow up.

I don’t know if it’s so much growing up that needs to be done, or more getting a clue.
Imagine if Colbert used his incredible powers to end drug addiction. He won a contest millions of people didn’t know about and has a cable show. His power is huge.
What would really be funny is if NASA issued a press release that said, “We are naming the room “Serenity.” As to the online contest, we were just joking.”

You know he is a comedian right? And surely you know he does this to boost ratings for his show…his job…where he makes money for a living?
I think it is hilarious and I voted for him. He puts a smile on my face for a 1/2 hour each day and that is well worth it.
What the hell are you talking about? Comedy man to end war? Funny guy on a cable show to increase love in the world? He is a comedian. Putting your name on a space ship is funny. Relax. I think Giant Steps has some hash that will mellow you out.
