Name the Big Climb on the Mooseman 2010 Course

I hope Keith keeps the new course. The climb has the potential to become a triathlon classic in the some category as the Beast in St. Croix or Nasty Grade at Wildflower…it is harder than both AND you do it twice.

I propose MOOSE-ZILLA

Does it already have a name? Any other proposals?

Not as fun as Moose zilla, but it was orchard hill road that intersected with north groton about half way through the hill.

So orchard hill?

or how’s about “The Rut”.

The Moose Hump
.

I propose it be named “F— You”.

That’s what I was muttering repeatedly under my gasping breath both times I crawled up it. The second time I went up, one of my miles took me 7 minutes and 30 seconds!

Next year (when they finish repaving the roads that were not ready this year) you will only have to go up it once as the bike will be a big loop. And that crazy descent will not be in there. I doubt KJ wants that descent in there regardless.

chain break hill (kinda like heart break)
.

I like yours but I would change it slightly to Moosilla or Moozilla since it rolls off the tongue a little easier.

It really ought to have timing mats at the bottom/top and a sponsor throwing in some prizes so we could see who the real Men/Women are…certainly not me since I sure lily-pedaled up it both times.

As much as I am “Honored” for the name, I think Moosezilla is pretty darn funny – and I like the idea of timing mats if KJ is listening.

you were the inspiration…

Hopefully KJ reads this thread at some point. I am sure he is just recovering from the aftermath of the flawless execution of his all star team in the midst of the Noah’s Arc deluge on both Saturday and Sunday.

So far we have:

I second the idea of timing mats, but they should only include your second time (no first loop hero times).

KJ, tell us that you will keep the “new course”!

All,

I’ve been lurking on the site for the past several months as I prepped for my first tri, which was the Mooseman Half. Last weekend was a helluva introduction to the sport! Had a great time. A huge thank you to all as I felt very prepared pouring through threads on the course, training, nutrition and other tips. For a deathly slow runner like myself, I was well satisfied with my 6 hr, 35 min finish.

I come from a climbing background and there is a climb in Alaska that has a reputation a bit like that hill could gain:

The Moose’s Tooth.

The ridgeline even look like that hill…

…Also - I heard from a local up there that they are going to put a windfarm on the ridgeline that runs just east of that that climb (essentially we circumnavigated the stretch of hills twice), which the guy said would affect access (I would doubt that).

Found this: http://www.wind-watch.org/news/2010/05/14/groton-wind-farm-conversation-continues/

Blow Back Hill??

I’m pretty sure that hill is going to be in the next year format but only one time.

I might be too hard, but I prefer mooseman than Ironman mooseman 70.3. The savor was really different… some details have been lost… like organic t-shirt for the finisher, webcam on the course…

So far we have:
Chain Break Hill Moosezilla Moozilla Moosehump

What? No one likes “F— You Hill”? I’m shocked…

Agree. Maybe it was the weather but I was much less impressed compared to 2009. Not sure what the extra $50 entry fee (without pre-race dinner) brought to the table other than the pros. Not a diss on the pro field, I love having the pros in the race.

I kept saying to myself “just shoot me now” and “with any luck I will crash on the descent and not have to do the hill a second time”. Unfortunately neither event happened. On the second climb of the hill I saw numerous participants walking their bikes up the hill. I thought about it, but then decided to stay on the bike since I was still going faster than those that were walking (although I am embarassed to say, not by much).

Agree. we were really lucky to have Magali Tyssere and Sam McGlone.
without the penality to sam… of 4 minutes knowing that she is 4 back.

I’M REALLY SURE IT’S NOT the fault of Keith Jordan. His race have been ironman formated…

“I might be too hard, but I prefer mooseman than Ironman mooseman 70.3.”

With nearly twice as many people in the race (653 in 2009, 1115 in 2010), and Mdots plastered everywhere,I guess it was to be expected. It felt very much like Timberman Jr…which certainly isn’t a bad thing, just a different flavor.

If you want a pretty cool smaller half, check out Pumpkinman on Sept 12th up in S. Berwick, ME.

My perspective is that I felt that all of the organization was focused on the course and not on the start/finish/spectators. I finished into what seemed like chaos. The line to get food was ridiculous; I didn’t even bother. There was nowhere for spectators to hide from shelter; the cost for coffee seemed ridiculous ($2 for a small cup). This does not compare well to any of the other races that I have done. The organizers should come down to New York City and check out how NY Road Runners organizes the end of their race with respect to food, recovery areas, chip clipping, etc… I was just a bit suprised overall.

As for the name of the climb, how about Moose’s Horn?

Mooseses ain’t got horns they have racks…

that’s a good one, “The Rack”

I raced Sat and volunteered on Sun and you are not alone in your thinking. I heard both from participants and spectators alike how much the race has changed (and not for the better) now that IM is in control. I know several NHites are removing it from their future schedules. Would Keith ever serve Sam’s Cola, I think not!
