N00b gearing up

So, I’m going into my first winter of “training” and have some gear questions based on a very limited budget. Having done my first sprint this past summer I’m stoked on the upcoming 2015 summer and have a couple of oly’s planned. With a 3rd looser finish (40-44ag) on my sprint, having left just a bit on the course, I think I can finish the oly respectably with the added structure of a training program. So, I’m looking for suggestions on all aspects of my training (S,B, and R). That said, I should reiterate my limited budget being I’ve got all the family stuff going on so I put kids sports etc. first which leaves just a bit to work with for myself. I’ve got an entry level roadie (2013 secteur elite) with a minoura mag 850 trainer. I screwed up and purchased a low end, non tech, sigma bike computer this past May when I got the bike so I’m trying to upgrade that. I’ve purchased a garmin ANT+ HR strap along with speed/cadence sensors. I’ve been close to pulling the trigger on the Garmin 500 and will as soon as I catch a good sale. With that, my plan was to get a membership from trainerroad and add my already purchased few sufferfest vids. I’ve been wondering if this current bike plan is money well spent? Or, should I focus on something else? I’m thinking power meter is out of the question at this point with my limited budget. I’ve got an annual membership at the local pool so I can get my swimming in, although I haven’t found a way to afford a trainer yet. Through some reading on ST though, I’ve got a bunch of vids and instructions I’m going to follow to self train in that aspect. I’ve been running for about 4 years with PB on the 10k at 44 so I need to pick that time up quite a bit as well.

I’d like something on the run for tracking stats to show my progression, if any, and was thinking of the TickR X HR strap? I’ve gone away from using phones or music gadgets so I like that it has memory. I’m also thinking it could help on the swim as well?

Anyway, I need some help spending a few loonies.

Thanks

If you are planning on doing a lot of bike training this winter and the price of a power meter is out of the question (it is for me also) I would recommend looking at the PowerCal (made by powertap). It is heart rate strap with some logic that translates heart rate into power. When tested against real power numbers, the peaks and valleys are not as pronounced and they are a little delayed (couple of seconds) but it does a decent job of giving you a perception of workout. I do not use it during the outdoor rides but I do find it useful on the trainer. It only costs $100 for the strap and it will sync up with your garmin when you get it.

Black Friday has yielded be terrific deals. Garmins at 50% off on previous year models or models that are being replaced by new ones. Wait six weeks and your money will go further.
