Myths in Triathlon

Ok, my favourite myth in triathlon is that you can swim as hard as you can possibly manage for the entire training session, because swimming is “low impact” so you won’t get hurt. I’m sure this is true if you were a college swimmer and have immaculate technique, but for the rest of us you will suffer no end of shoulder injuries and misery as you fight your way through this “no impact” training. So, what else should be added to the vault of triathlon myths?

The biggest myth is that triathlon is harder than swimming, cycling, or running.

That yellow swim caps are fastest.

Everyone knows it’s purple!

Another good myth:

Just swim lots and, if your technique is bad, it will get better on its own.

It won’t.

That’s not a myth. The myth is that swimming is 90% technique.

Oh jeez, do you realy have to start that argument again. Many more disagee with you than agree…You have your opinion, which many at least show respect for, so why do you have to keep poking that others are wrong…But YOUR RIGHT…better now

Wanna go…

You’re right, that’s a myth too.

Yeah, I got from the other thread that you’re the only one with THE TRUTH when it comes to swimming.

I agree, but it depends on how you define harder. I find triathlon training much harder than pure run training but no triathlon hurts like an open 5k/10k.

90 cadence is ideal
Midfoot/forefoot striking is more economical than heel striking
Ti swimming will make you faster
Rest weeks are necessary to get better

Yeah, that’s why I call myself, ‘The Authority’.

Open 5 k or 10k is a cake walk compared to 200 Fly or 400 IM

That you need a thin layer of water between your body and wetsuit.

You need to have a ‘superbike’ with the best frame aerodynamics to win.

You need to have a ‘superbike’ with the best frame aerodynamics to win.

I’m not sure I’ve actually heard anyone, even here, make that claim.

You have to do an Ironman to be a real triathlete.

Where do you fall on the over/ under 90 debate? For which discipline?

Do you feel midfoot is never more economical, or just that it isn’t universally better?

Do you feel midfoot is never more economical, or just that it isn’t universally better?
