Mystery running foot pain

Today I felt some very specific foot pain for the first time & I’m trying to sort out why it might have happened. The pain was on the top of my left foot where that ball of tendons is in front of the ankle(judging by diagrams, it looks like where the cuboid bone is maybe?). It started immediately & persisted for the first mile despite me trying to loosen the shoe up early on. After about a mile it went away but came back immediately after I finished my 6 mile run.

A few relevant notes:

  1. They’re Mizuno Wave Inspire 7s with ~49 miles use coming into today.
  2. I’ve used this exact model shoe for over a year(changing them out every 200-300 miles) & have been using the Wave Inspires for ~3 years without this problem.
  3. I’m using Lock Laces & haven’t altered the fit for over a week, which included a 14 mile run with no pain.
  4. The route is one I’ve done multiple times so I wasn’t going over crazy hills or anything I’m unprepared for. Also, it was a steady state/Z2 run so I wasn’t blowing it out.

I’m a little stumped as to what could have caused the issue, anyone have any ideas? So far it’s a one-time pain so maybe it was just a freak thing for today & will be gone on Monday when I do my next run, but I’m all ears if I’m missing something.

i think you hit it right on the head with a subluxated cuboid bone. i have no idea without looking but that would be my first guess. im a chiropractor and a few adjustments in that area would likely work well.

I had pain on the top of my foot for about a month earlier this year that would not go away. When I looked at diagrams of the foot, I assumed I had a cuboid stress fracture or cuboid syndrome. I went to my podiatrist and it turned out that I had damaged a nerve on the top of my foot, very close in proximity to the cuboid bone. He gave me one shot in the nerve and within about a week my foot was 80% better and was completely better within a month or so.

My podiatrist told me that this often happens from shoes tied to tight, or a buckle style shoe that is worn too tightly buckled. I use laces that don’t tie on my running shoes, and slip them on they are so loose. So in my case, I may have done this with another pair of shoes and it may have had nothing to do with running at all.

At any rate, this is just an idea and I hope your issue is as easy to fix as mine was. I definitely recommend that you go see a podiatrist.

Something I just discovered: my top-of-foot pain while running seems to be caused by fin usage while swimming. The more I use fins, the more painful it is for me to run. When I stop using fins, the pain goes away. Only 1 foot of mine is impacted, and the pain is in a similar area as yours. I don’t know if this is common or not, just sharing my experience in case it helps.

If you were a hockey player I might say “skate bite” or “lace bite”. Curious about socks?

By exact model I assume you mean the Inspire 7s the whole time?

I only ask because I had been using Mizuno Wave Alchemy 10 with great success for quite some time, then went to the 11 and pretty much immediately had pain somewhere around the same area (may not be the exact same thing - hard to say). Don’t know if they subtly altered the cut, or the stiffness of the material or what (or perhaps it was a lacing thing), but ouch.

Probably entirely coincidental, just thought I’d mention it.

Yes. I had a similar experience to what you mentioned when I moved up one model of Wave Inspires(from the 5s to the 6s, I think) but for whatever reason the 7s didn’t have the same issue. That’s why I’m buying several pairs so I don’t have to move to a newer model anytime soon.

I have had intermittent pain in that spot for years. I haven’t ever been able to isolate the cause of it. It does seem to happen more frequently when I have had some breaks in my running. Really wierd - I can run for miles without any problem and it suddenly hurts so bad I have to walk it off.

It happened again last night. I loosened the lock laces & it seems to have helped some, so I’m going to try loosening them some more to see if it eliminates the issue. I don’t get why it would have changed without me adjusting the laces, it’s not like I gained 5lb in my left foot.
