Mystery noise coming from new Renn disc

Help! I have this strange sound coming from my 5-7-5 Renn disc, its about 1 month old. It sounds like a DJ scraching records or a squaking bird?? Anyone else have with this srtange sound?

Dave from VA

yeah, mine makes noise too. I posted a couple of days ago and got no response. Mine rattles a lot and sometimes sounds as if it’s rubbing, but when I spin it by hand, it spins freely.

Mine had a very small squawking bird in it that was actually running a turntable! Once I let him out, the noise abated.

Sorry. Mine’s fine. I take it you greased the cassette before sliding it on, and the lock-ring is tight?

I’m sure Frank will hear about this and respond…or, you could just call him. Hope you have an easy, quick fix.

we are having a few of these. the problem is lack of lube on the three pawls. we will post a fix on our web site shortly. it’s a simple fix if you’d like to tackle it yourself. remove the cassette/cogs, then the drive side spacer (uses a 2mm allen wrench). the cassette carrier will now slide right out. place a drop of light oil (tri-flow works) on each of the three pawls where they meet the steel pawl carrier. reassemble. when you slide the cassette carrier back on it’s easier if you turn it while sliding it into the ratchet ring. if you are not comfortable doing the fix we can have it picked up and turned around very quickly. very sorry. we now break every hub down before the wheels goes out and they are all checked for lube.

now, a rattle is something new. i’ll need more info to understand. i’m out of the office until late saturday afternoon.

I’ve got 50-60 miles on mine. No problems. On a side not, mine sounds like a freakin jet fighter. Awsome.

Frank’s fix works.

I got a 2004 Renn and am very happy with it. When I first rode it, it would develop the squeak after approx 2-5 miles, never when cold. Reading “Ze Gopha’s” thread of May 26, I twice removed the cassette cogs and greased the cassette body, which did nothing. The third time, I also undid the hub packer grub-screw, pulled off the cassette body, and greased everything in sight. Wheel has been great since. This also has the effect of quietening down the pawls, though it seems some people don’t want this. Ungreased, with the disc acting as an amplifier, the pawls say to other riders “hey, I’m freewheeling, and I’m catching you”.

Ah, beautiful! I will be taking mine apart tonight when I finish fixing my car’s AC. Is a light oil the right thing, or is a good grease a better choice? For high-force metal-to-metal contact grease or a thick oil usually works better. I imagine it might cause a wee bit more drag while freewheeling, but how often do you actually freewheel during a race anyway…

I read somewhere (on another thread, I think) that grease on the pawls can actually prevent them from disengaging, so you won’t be able to freewheel. Only oil on the pawls. Grease everywhere else.

grease in the pawls will keep them from 'en’gaging properly and all you will do is freewheel. oil works best.

I knew it was one of the two options
.

Ooooo now permanently freewheeling…that would definitely suck. Maybe oil is the best choice after all.

I rode my disc for the first time yesterday. The sound came after only 10K. Back home I took a brief look at Franks fix and performed the operation. I was very easy. The easiest thing I’ve ever repaired on a bike, actually. When I was finished the wheel would not rotate properly. For a second I thought I had ruined the wheel, but then I notiecd the brake was on. Hopefully the sound is gone when I use it the next time.

Hahahaha, sorry but that was too funny. I did the same repair myself, it took about 5 minutes including carefully wiping and oiling the bearing surfaces. I haven’t ridden it since, but the freewheeling sound is much, much quieter than before. The pawls were totally dry before, I just hope there was no premature wear of any of the parts in there. Any suggestions for getting the outer cup nice and tight on the bearings? Mine originally did (and still does) have a bit of side-side play in the cassette body. Maybe this isn’t a big concern, but it seems as though it should be tight…
