My Wireless Network has disappeared

This is being sent on my desktop. None of my other machines can “see” the wireless network anymore. Any thoughts?

Hijacked? Did you encrypt?

Joe

We often have to reset our wireless. Have you done that?

Hijacked? I don’t know. I didn’t go anywhere “bad”. It is both machines at the same time (laptop with a PCM Card, and a desktop with an internal card). I also have a desktop (Main Machine) where the router is stationed and which has a direct connection (not wireless) to the router–that is working fine. Have I perhaps set up a firewall at the Main Machine or otherwise screwed something up? I don’t recall screwing with anything.

How long has it been down? Are you sure it’s not a transmitter issue?

Based on that it is both machines that use the wireless connection, I do suspect the transmitter, but there could probably be a bunch of reasons why it is not transmitting–my main machine might have told it not to.

It has been down four days, I estimate.

Lotsa thoughts not sure any will help though.

First do you know if it’s actually down or simply not visible? Second is the access from on emachine to another down or everything including access to the interenet…assuming you have a wireless/broadband combo thingy. Can you ping one machine from another? Can you ping teh internet from any opf the machines that are entirely wireless?

Could be any number of issues. Unless you have gone thru and set up some fairly complex port pass thru’s, max addresses etc the easiest thing to do is just reset the router. I’d try powering off and on first. If that doesn’t work they usually have a reset button. That does mean however you have to go thru and set everything back up again.

Not much help I know but it’s kinda like diagnosing cancer over the internet. Could be something simple like an electron got in teh wrong spot or maybe your router is fried or any number of things.

I agree with Matt. Reset it and start from scratch. If you can http:// ‘admin’ to it with the wired box now, make sure you capture existing settings (blocked ports, deny-lists, permitted host mac addresses, etc.) so you don’t have to look it up later. If it doesn’t work after you reset it, make sure the radio card/antenna are properly seated/screwed in and if it doesn’t work after that, take a trip to circuit city/best buy. I have a NetGear personally and we use Linksys/Cisco model at work. I would recommned the NetGear based upon ease of use out of the box. Good luck.

Hmmm… probably the best thing to do is reset the router (this would get rid of any hijacking)… and see if you get a signal.

If that doesn’t work… well, it could be hardware related.

I have a Linksys router and my wireless went to crap. Called tech support and they had me change the channel. Looks like one of my neighbors got a new wireless phone on the same frequency and that was the cause. Works great now.

I wnet through about two hours of on line tech support last night. No luck/ I think the router died, but they could not tell me how to tell if it was sending a signal that my two other machines were not seeing.

Off to COMPUSA for a new one.

My Linksys router went belly up so I now have a new Netgear one and life is good again. Though I did get a lot more done in the mornings/evenings here at home w/o internet/email access.

I’ve had 2 linksys routers go belly up!! Never again, switched over to DLink and everything has been running well for over a year. No resets, nothing.

I was afraid to change due to compatiblility issues with the PCM card on my laptop and the internal card on my other desktop.

On a pc that is wireless capable, download net stumbler (www.stumbler.net). This is a great free tool. Not only will it find all the wireless networks around, it also lists helpfull info like channel, speed, and signal strength.

If you are running on the same channel as a near neighbor, then may have some trouble. This would also show if your wireless computers were even seeing a signal from your router.

Security - if you do nothing else, change the default admin passwd. This will not keep people from jumping on your wireless network, it will keep them from changing settings on your router.
