Since i m not the full time professional triathlete anymore and have to share swim lanes with everyone during pool hours at the community center, i have to admit that i can be very frustrating to swim with people that don’t know how to behave in the swim lane.
It seems like the sign…FAST, MEDIUM, SLOW have no meaning to anyone. it s often a circus at the pool and i have suffer a few times of SWIM RAGE!!!
so, i m presenting this video with 4 advices on how to share a lane… so everyone can enjoy there workout!
5 mins to tell me 4 things. I got bored after 1 min because you had said nothing of value. Then I exited the video. Whatever bothers you … bothers you. I swim back and forth on one side of the lane. If that is an issue … I don’t care.

Hopefully you practice sighting. I’ve seen some good head knocks followed by EMTs carting off swimmers.
This is awesome, very well done and thanks for posting it. I could have used this a few years back when I used to swim mornings before work at the local Y; there was a woman with a yellow swim cap who should have been in the medium lane but would always take the fast lane and had no idea how to swim with other people, especially in the first scenario on the video. Didn’t matter if you gently tapped the sole of her foot to let her know your were coming up right behind her or said something to her on the deck or during her break (she would ignore everyone, wouldn’t even acknowledge that you were speaking to her). I think if I had this video and superimposed a yellow swim cap on the turtle, then maybe she would have understood.
Nice work…
I actually do believe that there should be some type of pool etiquette rules that one should have to sign off on prior to using the public lanes at a busy pool. It really makes it better for everyone (fast, medium, slow… it doesn’t matter).
In Vancouver they actually have a lane from time to time that lists a minimum swim time (1:40/100m). It still gets ignored from time to time but generally people are pretty good about observing it. The problem with most lane speeds is that they are usually relative to whoever else is in the pool at the time…
Around here, I’ve never seen the pools busy enough that there was a need to circle swim at all. Max I’ve seen is 2 per lane, in every lane. Because this is the way it usually works around here, when a spot in a lane opens up (slow, medium, OR fast), the next person waiting takes the spot and swims. Therefore, I’ve ended up swimming in all three speed lanes with all sorts of other people. Everyone stays to their side, and everyone is happy. Well, at least as happy as you can be while swimming…

I can appreciate the video for the simple fact that now if I ever do get forced into circle swimming, I actually have an idea of what to do. Thanks JohnnyO
The reason that the “Strange Denizens” thread exists is that often their is no educating or reasoning with some of these lunatics.
Me- “You can have this half of the lane.” Or “Jump in we can circle swim.”
“Oh no I can just wait.”
Me- “Ok, but i’m not going to get out soon. And I am not going to stop swimming just cause you are standing around.”
"But I was hoping to practice my swimming and get in shape. But you can swim well enough and are in shape. "
Me- “that’s cause I did not need a whole lane to myself.”
“Humph- some people. I think I will go wait for a treadmill.”

I did have a disclosure at the 12 seconds mark that my video are always poor quality and content. what puzzle me is why did you stretch the agony for another 48 sec?

this brings up an interesting question - should i wait for an invitation to a lane, or just assume that everyone wants to have the privilege of sharing a lane with me?

I’ve had this experience several times, they try to make you feel guilty cause you won’t give them the whole effing lane.

You don’t need to wait for an invitation but you do need to let the other person(s) using the lane know you’re there. Generally people just split lanes at my pool and I always pick one side and swim on it even if I’m the only one in the lane, but it is still a shock to come off the wall and someone is right there behind you in the lane, which happens fairly often. I think the best way to get in a lane is to get in and then just stand or hang on the wall until the other swimmer comes back down to that end and you’re sure he/she has seen you. If 3 or 4 are circling, be sure all of them see that 1 more person is joining the fun:)

Very nice video, great use of your kid’s toys!!! My only quibble would be that in the one example of the turtle doing a hard 400 m repeat and the duck doing a diff set, if the duck is faster than the turtle, or it is doing a shorter faster swim, e.g. the duck is doing 20 x 100 on 1:30 vs the turtle doing 5 x 400 on 6:00, then the duck should leave in front of the turtle but he/she should leave about 5 or 6 sec ahead of the turtle. If the duck is doing 1:15s for his 100s vs turtle doing say 1:20/100 for his 400, then the duck should start ahead of turtle. After a few 100s the duck may have to adjust his interval to avoid catching turtle but I would think they could work out w/o much problem. Just a minor point though, love the video overall:)
that is one of my issue. I CANT STAND SPLITTING LANE. I m all about doing circle. why, because if there is a 3rd person that decide to jump without telling me…i dont want a head on collision when i m going hard and fast. Circle is safe for everyone. You don’t even need to tell others your jumping in because it s a straight forward pattern and if everyone stick to it… you can fit 4 5 6 people in no problem. i guess you have to have swam competitively to understand the full organisation of circle swimming but it s hand down the best way to have many swimmer do different workouts without bothering each other.
i have never seen lane splitting sign at a pool,. here in canada or at least in places i have swim in the past few years, it s always circle. You never have to wait. But it s important for everyone to know the rules.
on that scenario… i guess i made it comfusing but i decided that Trevor Turtle would be the faster swimmer. I wanted to go easy on that fictional Trevor guy…
but i agree with you, what you describe is how it should be…
