My Vegas trip was not good for training

Unless I received some benefit from standing for hours on end at the craps table. Planned to get some running in (at least in the hotel gym if I didn’t get up early enough), and even packed one set of training clothing for each day. At least I didn’t have to worry about putting sweaty clothes in my suitcase since I didn’t even think about running while I was there. Saw Stomp and The Producers while I was there and it looked like the performers in Stomp got some exercise. Made me jealous, gave me motivation for about 10 minutes, then it was back to drinking free beers and working on my “standing” endurance. Oh well, I didn’t gorge myself with buffet food and amazingly didn’t gain any significant weight at all while I was there. I did receive some motivation yesterday on my way back. We stopped in at a gas station on St. Rose (a street that connects to the interstate to take you back to Hoover Dam) and saw a couple of women with their bikes training. If the girl with the PC3 with Zipp wheels visits this forum, NICE BIKE! Back to training now. I am not looking forward to my first workout today.

Well if you played for that long you must have either done very well or had a large bankroll to lose. The old “win a small fortune by starting with a big fortune” addage applies often in Las Vegas.

I’m going there next week to celebrate my 30th. First vacation without the kids in 20 months. I can not wait. My wife’s a crazy runner though and if she doen’t run 5-7miles day, she gets really po’d.
So I figure even if I party all night she has the willpower to get me out the door running. I think I can go at her pace without blowing out the calf muscles again. We also plan on hiking red rock and maybe shooting up to Zion. So I’ll get some activity in, no bicycling or swimming though.
The wife, much to my dismay, fears crashing on the bike and getting run over, so will not ride.
Oh well, a white cat crossed my path while running last week. I’ll take that as good luck for the tables.

Great, I’m headin’ there at the end of September for the Mr. Olympia! I also “PLAN” to run at least every OTHER day, but my gf already has plans to see a few shows and I got the Olympia expo/show to go to as well as an after party of some sort…

Sort of a blend of the two. We had a decent bankroll to lose, but won some money early on, and proceeded to lose over the last couple of days. My wife and I haven’t been on a vacation without our kids in a REALLY long time. This was a no holds barred vacation since we don’t know when we’ll be back on another vacation like this. It was truly a blast and we saw some great shows. Certainly won’t be going back for a while, but I budgeted in some “losing money while gambling” as part of the vacation cost, so I didn’t have a heart attack when we lost money at the casinos.

Thank you to contributing to the state of Nevada…i enjoy not having to pay state income tax! You missed out there are some pretty good runs around town…you just have to get up pretty early to beat the heat. The best part is running on the strip before sunrise and seeing the people that have been out ALL night partying.

I think the next time we go, I’ll be more conservative with my bedtime. I have heard that early morning runs on the strip are the way to go. I think the best way to do it would be to schedule some training time (possibly bring my bike since we drive in from Phoenix) with some Las Vegas STers. Scheduled training with strangers would get me to bed and up early in the morning. Peer pressure works.

I
have heard that early morning runs on the strip are the way to go.

its the only way to go. We were there two weeks ago, rode on borrowed bikes near lake meade started at 6.30 and by 9, we were cooked! It was hot for us coming from the pacific northwest.

If you hire a car then you can drive to red rock area to ride, or head the other way to lake meade and boulder city, but that heat makes it interesting this time of year

I am from Phoenix, Arizona so the Las Vegas heat is pretty familiar to me. I am quite used to buckets of sweat dripping from the pads on the fore of my helmet when stopping to refill water bottles and stuff. Not ideal training conditions, but I will take and endure through our summer training conditions over having to ride on the trainer all winter long.

Man, it was fun being in Vegas and not waking up to train, but I am really regretting my laziness now. The thought of running tonight is not pleasant.

my problem was I stopped sweating until we hit the 7/11. Within minuted of entering the air con environment it looked like I was standing in a wading pool! I hear there are some groups that ride, best bet is to contact a few of the bike shops for group rides.

Actually, I’m pretty sure she does

I haven’t been to Vegas in 20 years. Someone good at planning should put together a Slowtwitch Vegas get together for the off-season. Run at Red Rock canyon, MTB in Blue Diamond, gamble, party.

Tell your wife that a run along the strip in the morning is a lot of fun. Between the Stratosphere tower and Mandaly Bay is about four miles long. Start at your hotel and run to either one and circle around to the other one and back is 8. If you go at the right time you can see amixture of old hookers and drunk tourists. Pretty funny stuff.

I only know of two women in the Las Vegas area with P3c’s with Zipps. Both are serious cuties. Both are faster than me as well. At least I weigh more than both of them and have more facial hair.

Living in cold climate, an October/November business trip, staying at Mandelay Bay was marvelous. Running on the strip (southwards, out of town) in the mornings, followed by a short swim in the pools before breakfast. And a bit more swimming later in the day… Very nice to be able to train in summer temperatures (which the locals called “cold weather”).

How timely. I’m going to LV in Mid-October, piggybacking on my wife’s business trip. Basically means I have the day to myself to do as I please. A few questions for those with LV experience (apologies for high jacking the thread)…
-Staying at Caesar’s, and apparently one can do some swimming in the pools. At what point does it get too crowded to do laps (approx)? Which is the best of the pools to swim at?
-Running: Planning on running with the Niketown group that apparently runs every wednesday night from Niketown. Anyone have experience with the group?
-Cycling: I’m torn between renting a roadbike from Las Vegas cyclery or joining a mountain bike tour with them. Recommendations? As well, if I do rent the road bike, how long am I looking at to ride to Lake Mead and/or The Hoover Dam, versus Red Rock canyon area? Which is the better ride?

Thanks gang.

Don’t know of the pool at Caesars. Contact Dan at the running team http://www.lasvegasrunningteam.com/ about info about the running (where and when). Did also meet some triathlets on the Sunday run - all very nice people.

The girl appeared to be in very good shape, but I couldn’t get a good long look because the wife was in the car directly in front of the convenience store/gas station. I decided not to overstep my bounds with my wife since she had cut me enough slack during the trip looking at all the ridiculously slutty outfits women were wearing. Nothing like a ripped female triathlete though. FWIW, I passed her and her training partner in my truck like they were standing still down the road.

I am not sure how you get out to Lake Mead from LV, but going as far as Hoover Dam can get pretty dicey as there is a lot of construction in the area as well as very narrow two lane roads. Having just made the drive in a car, I definitely wouldn’t recommend Hoover Dam on a bike.

When you’re on holiday you’re on holiday, and IMO that also includes a holiday from training. Last Caribbean trip my wife told me beforehand that she was adamant that she would at least do some running. She didn’t. We’re scuba diving and drinking tropical rum drinks for a week. Who feels like running.
