My vacation, sad but true

Tomorrow, I’m fleeing craptacular upstate NY for 3 days in sunny south Florida - my first vacation in 2 years. The sad part: I already have an overly-ambitious training load planned starting at 5:30 each morning, and I’m like a kid on Christmas eve. Two-day bike rental, rides/runs mapped, olympic-length pool on-site … us yankees, we’re generally overwhelmed by the prospect of a shorts-only workout in April. The not-so-sad part: I get to spend the rest of the time not working, not shoveling snow, lounging with my wife and playing with the kids on the beach, while eating the greasiest, fattiest barbecue ever slain by mankind. Of course, that’s only protein for recovery purposes.

Sounds fantastic! Have a great time.

I like this part! Have a brisket sandwich smothered in BBQ sauce with some fries for me, will ya?

Depending on where the OP is staying, I may make some recommendations. We have some pretty mean brisket and boston butt 'round these parts.

You better change 5:30 to 4am and begin with the bike if you don’t want to get run over
.

The only sad part is only 3 days. Rumor has it 10 inches of snow fell yesterday in parts uf upstate. The really sad part is I’m heading North to Upstate for Easter. 3 days of really cold and snow. No pool, No bike… ENJOY THE VACATION.

Yes we had snow .Tug hill got a good amount.
Is it spring yet

What group are you training with?

Yesterday it was 80 degrees and not a cloud in sight. Today 70 not a cloud in sight. I"ll be awaking tomorrow morning looking out our living room window up onto Thunder Mountain and it’ll be covered in snow. Snow is expected down to 5000ft and we are at 4500ft. Temps tomorrow should be about 70.

I’m from NY as a kid and FL was also considered heaven to us when we were young. We never could imagine temps in the 70-and 80s all year long…enjoy.

I grew up on the west edge of the Tug Hill plateau. When they show footage from the midwest claiming blizzards and snow emergencies … it’s really child’s play. It snows there every day (5-7 inches) for like 4 months straight. My parents always have snow around their house well into May. I live a mere 45 minutes south, and our snow has been gone for weeks. Judging by the climate of my run tonight, no, it’s not spring yet.

I’m going to Mickey’s Money Making Machine on Monday for a week. Thankfully the kids are older and I will not have to mortgage the house to pay for multiple parkhopper, rib dabber, super line jumping passes/tickets. We are staying outside the shrine. Probably have to let them go once for some rides. That’s it.

Looking forward to running and sweating. And some swimming I hope. And relaxing by the pool reading “Once A Runner”.
Can’t wait.

West of the Tug? Where Exactly?

Hey now… be nice! There’s nowhere better than upstate NY… from May to October (November through mid-April, admittedly, can be kinda rough)

I couldn’t agree more. Contend with winter and enjoy the other three seasons. I’ve tried the southern migration thing, and I was not built for 7 months of summer. As a whole, the south is miserably hot in the summer, but downtown Atlanta is absolutely oppressive. My policy is that if you’re cold, you can always put on a sweater. If you’re hot, you can strip down to your birthday suit and it won’t help you a damn bit.
