I haven’t really looked at all of this for a few years and it’s not a huge deal to me (yet here I am posting about it…) but I am a little uncertain about the computation and the whole “pacer” thing.
I have raced 8 USAT events, won the age group in 6 of them and was 2nd in the other two, with at least a few of them (Door County; Naperville) being relatively large. I am down in the 76.xxxx somethings. Is that the function of race size, or a random AG pacer or…?
My last chance at a decent ranking before Ron destroys us all…
Hey guys… the water-car joke went over my head. Any help for the clueless?
There was (is?) someone on this forum who was rather obsessed with USAT Rankings (no, not me), the use of GPS to track athletes and detect drafters on the bike, and some other odd stuff. He had a water car, and his user name had something to do with the chemical formula for water. He got a lot of abuse, and I don’t know if he was kicked out or just took his toys and left.
Mark it is not based on Age Group it is based on overall race. So, you winning your age group just means that your age group is not fast compared to the guys winning overall or at least that is what the data would suggest.
Correct me if i am wrong. But look up the ranking of the guys winning those races overall and see what their ranking is.

Thanks…this probably is what happens. At first glance though it would seem to beg the question why break it down into age group rankings if you are being ranked against the overall winner of the race, but I guess I should just go to the USAT page and do a little more research on it all.
I doubt vey much I’m telling you anything you don’t already know, but for anyone kind of new to the rankings…
Yes, it will change hugely. I am currently in the bottom handful of A-A, just above H-M, in M60-64, and once all the guys who haven’t done three or more sanctioned races get “eliminated”, I will dip down to about midway through H-M. I’ve been there and done that before, several times, and know that at about this stage in the proceedings, one needs to be above the midpoint of A-A to begin to breathe easily, if A-A is their goal. Same goes for H-M, too, for that matter.
I love this stuff ---- can’t figure it out for the life of me, but love it anyhow. I find it highly reliable as to how you stack up against your peers, and I base that on the fact that, within about 15 guys to either side of me, on any given day I could beat them and they could beat me. But then there are those guys way at the top, who serve as fine reality checks!
Just an FYI - I’m a local Philly guy who has raced against John Dawson at numerous Piranha races, he’s is a stud and hell of a biker. Another local guy to be on the lookout for is Jesse Sturino. He just turned 50 this year and is getting back into tri’s after a 2 year injury. He’s more of a long distance specialist who has done Kona, but just recently beat John Dawson at Marshman Sprint a few months ago. He also recently qualified for Vegas at the Poconos 69.1. He’s another stud like John Dawson and part of the new Turks Head Racing group out of West Chester, PA. I would love to see you 3 guys over age 50 place in the top 5 overall at a local race and take it to the young guns!!!

he lost his job at age 54 or so, had back problems, I’m guessing he can’t afford and/or doesn’t do tris anymore…

He has ranked races in 2011.
Is a water car one of them little cars built in the late 60’s , early 70’s that can go from land to water back to water again? I almost bought one and driven in the Delaware with one in New Hope. About 2 weeks after I passed up on it . He stalled and went over the damn there and sunk it :0(
Yeah, they go for $200k now. I’m putting an outboard on my $20k Jeep as we speak and going to make a 1000% profit biatch!!!
**yes, I realize the math for the profit has to be minus the original cost of the car, therefore not making it a 1000% “profit”, but I’m still sick, so back off.
Damn!! I think he wanted 5600.00 if memory serves me correctly and that was only 15-20 years ago!! Figures i did not buy eBay stock when they started up and Samual Adams stock also. Had the chance to get both before they went public. I am such a moron :0(
Ken: I’ve raced both john and you and you do indeed have your work cut out for you. While, I’ve never been able to best you, I did use to beat john…but that was 4-5 years ago. He has radically improved over the last two years.
You are a stronger fish than he but he does have you on the bike. I think the run (when you are healthy) is pretty close. In an Oly or a 750/20k/5k, I think you take him. At Devilman, Pine Barrens, Bassman or any of the heavy bike rides you’ll have your hands full.
Since Des disappeared I’ve been waiting for someone to step up and I think he is that guy. There is also a guy down in DE, rick Brokaw that would give you trouble in a run centric race. Maybe Wes Burns as well.
Of course, if you want to race me in the MIOGA Triple 100 (100 yd swim/100 mile bike/100 yard dash) i’ll be happy to smoke you as well!
Absolutely! I know Barry well and he is the real deal. He was 2nd at EM and had a couple of very fast times at Kona. I think he finished 5th with a 9:54 this year–despite being a pretty mediocre swimmer. He is a low 2 hour Oly guy. Sub 3 hour marathoner (low 3’s in an IM). He is a great ultradistance runner as well. I’ve trained a far amount with him and was blown away by his bike strength. I remember one ride where he borrowed a bike and I had trouble staying on his wheel–I think he did a 5:07 or something at Kona!
I also recall that he was top 3 at one of the ITU worlds recently, either in Du or Tri.
Ken is an awesome triathlete but Barry is a freak of nature…
Do I see a muck(water portion) filled race challenge for you three at Devilman this year ? It is going to be hard to get Ken to swim in that water, he has girlie girl tendencies that way. Anywho…I say you guys throw down at Devilman. I will go to make sure you guys play nice and give live updates.
