My new bike and its maker -- pic

Picked up my new Yaqui today from Ves.

Size 55 in DE geometry (ie, steep). Saddle nose is 3cm in front of bb; drop to armrests is 16.5cm, and can go as low as 20 without an adjustable stem.

Small frame with long wheelbase. Front-center is 64 (equivalent to size 59 QR or 58 P3; I’m 6’ tall). Ultegra components (moved onto their fourth frame) with FSA Carbon Compact cranks. New FSA/Visiontech flat-wing base bar with small C2s cut down on the ends. Ouzo Pro Aero fork.

I’ll give a ride report after I get a chance to ride it (tomorrow morning).

I can’t see the pic… Can you try and repost it?

Thanks.

Jim

Nice paint.

What is the fork rake? I thought the DE geometry was coming with a 45 or 50mm, and I thought the aero maxed out at 40mm.

On my machine, it comes up sometimes and sometimes it doesn’t. Right click on the placeholder, click Properties and try pasting the URL into the address line on your browser.

The Ouzo Aero comes in a 45, so I went with that instead of Ves’ preferred 50mm standard road fork. I wanted an aero fork.

In measuring the finished bike, the 45 Reynolds fork only increased the trail (and reduced the front-center) by 3mm rather than the 5mm that it “should have” done. There is always some room for error in the published specs on these forks, and the 45 Reynolds turns out to have been the right call. I’ll know for sure when I ride it tomorrow morning.

Nice paint, eh?

So that’s what Ves looks like. It’s good to finally put a face to the name. I dealt with him over the phone only when ordering my Carbo back in July/August. Also a size 55 frame (700c wheelsize)with 79 degree seat angle. Actually, I have to run a Thomson setback seatpost to be at 79 degrees, so that would mean that with a regular straight post I could even go steeper. Anyway, Ves recommended the Easton aero fork because it offers 43mm rake, plus he seems to like the Easton forks. I have only good things to say about this bike. Wonderful, just wonderful.

I just got my new Yaqui via UPS today; all red w/DA10. I’ll put it together tonight and ride it tomorrow. I’m grateful that the winds are finally dying down. A full report follows.

Ok, I rode it. It does what it’s supposed to do. Tracks straight and true down the road and corners just right on flats and downhills. No understeer at all (a problem in some slack headtube bikes). Just great. This long front-center is really the answer to handling and comfort problems on steep bikes.

I also weighed it after installing bottle cages and the Powertap wiring kit. With Powertap rear and Velomax front, the bike weighs 19.0 pounds. That’s pretty good given that I haven’t sought out any weight-saving components (and don’t plan to). Just basic stuff. The only change for racing will be to put the 404 on front and a cover on the Powertap.

Somebody I ran into asked why I didn’t buy a bigger frame. After all, I’ve got a wicked long seat post on this bike and an upward-sloping stem. The answer is top tube length. I have a short torso for my height, and the next size bigger frame would be the right height, but would be too long. I could have done a custom frame, but Ves and I went over the pros and cons, and I decided on a stock 55 instead of a custom 57 with shorter top tube.

Out of curiosity, what is the distance between the top of the saddle and the bb? Anywhere close to 79-80 cm?

80 to the “dip” in the middle of the saddle.

I suspected you and I had similar measurements, and you are confirming it. I also belong to the long-legged, short-torsoed group…

Nice bike, by the way!

Totally different topic, but did you end up riding the Rosarito-Ensenada route? I did not, unfortunately…

No, I couldn’t (ok, failed to) fit it in. In a “small world” coincidence, I am moving to a new house in early January. My new next door neighbor is the ride promoter. I have a feeling I’ll be doing the ride next year!

If I follow you it means your son will have his classroom buddy as his neighbor?

Good memory! Yes, that’s right. Maybe he’ll stop flopping on the floor and whining, “I have nothing to dooooooooooo!” I’ll just toss him over the fence.
