agreed! Any saddle ideas? Is there a better one for this issue? I’m assuming that all saddles have a life span. The new version worked well for a year, but just now is causing the issues. Stay with the same saddle style, just new? Or…
Change saddles. I had this happen earlier this year on my road bike as well.
Any form of cushioning is going to lose effectiveness over time & use, unless you use one of the saddles thats just a carbon or alloy shell, then I’d imagine it wouldn’t wear (but just thinking of using one for more than a few minutes has the boys scared).
Personally I’ve never been a big fan of stock saddles, don’t think I’ve kept one for longer than a month.
I thought I would give the stock saddle a go at least and it seemed to work and didn’t cause me to spend any more cash. So I stuck with it… Now it is time… What saddle do you ride with?
I have an ISM Adamo Race and, while it’s not for everyone, I have never gone numb on it. Ever. I used to go numb after about 30 mins on my old saddle (which, incidentally, had a cutout).
On my road bike I’ve got a V-Flow Plus (just got it a bit over a week or so ago, been happy with it).
On my tri bike I’ve got a Fi’zik Arione. It gets the job done, never had any numbness, not incredibly comfortable either, but hey, it works. At some point (eg when I can afford to) I’ll probably switch to the regular V-Flow.
saddles with no cushioning can actually prevent this problem, as you don’t sink down onto it putting pressure everywhere
you only get pressure where you want it, on your sit bones.
I can’t ride in the aero position for a second with a normal saddle, have to use the adamo, which has essentially no padding where you actually sit
on the road bike though I have a selle italia slr, no padding at all, works great

I agree with this in theory and the saddle I just changed out had pretty much no cushioning, worked great for almost two years. Wasn’t cutting it this year.
In practice I like having some cushioning, although the actual saddle still has to fit. Sitting on a pillow on top of a saddle geometry that doesn’t fit isn’t going to work (plus everyone would look at you weird).

I used to have this problem. I’ve since used several saddles with a “cut-out” in the middle. They’ve all worked to avoid this situation. Currently I’m riding the Specialized TriTip SL and it’s my favorite so far.
Yes. Although I’ve used a bunch of different tri shorts and bike shorts. My nicest shorts from last year no longer exist, either, and I don’t remember the model. Switched to Desoto 400 mile this year and have been happy with them (except for the price, I need them to go 50% off again so I can get another pair).
I actually just had this happen to me as well. I changed out my bike and put road drops etc. on it now that I’m living in rural southern Oregon where there are no flat roads. On my first ride it was a little chilly, so I had tights on, gloves, the whole deal. I didn’t realize that my junk went numb since I was cold, and when I stood up, I thought for sure I was pissing myself. I had to stop, take off my gloves, and check myself to see if I had wet pants. Luckily (?) they were dry, and it was just my saddle.
So I’m now trying to find a good deal on something since AmeriCorps doesnt pay… Any good, lower priced saddles, or deals anybody’s seen?
Seems there are a lot of people that love the Fizik Arione 2 saddle… So I am thinking about that one. I found a LBS shop that has them on sale for $189, is that a good price?
What is the norm for saddle satisifaction?: Can you ride and return??? Or is it a buy and re-sell if not happy with it?
Just so you know, Fizik saddles tend to have a logo right on the sides near where your legs will pass when you’re pedaling. On both of the Fizik saddles I’ve ridden, that logo gets rubbed off after just a few rides.
You’ll want to check with your LBS about their individual return policy before you buy the saddle.
I had the same problem and switched to a Specialized TriTip. Problem solved. I did a 4.5 hour ride on Saturday, no numbness or soreness. I a big fan of that saddle. I also like Fizik Ariones, but they don’t have the cutout like Specialized.
Is the cutout a big benefit? What exactly is it’s function?
Yes. It’s function is to keep your “junk” from falling asleep. So there tain’t no pressure on the taint.
My first felt saddle did the same to me. I switched to the Adamo (one race, one road) and they both solved the problem for me.
x 2 …I ended up ditching my stock DA seat for an ISM race since I was having numbness issues as well. I can’t tell you how happy I am with that choice. Money well spent!
