Title says it all. I bought my Canon Powershot G1 in 2001 before I went to Europe. Now, it’s time to get a new one. It’s been through some abuse. It still works, but it seems like it isn’t as sharp as it used to be. Also, the internal memory is gone and it will not store the date and time whenever I shut the power down. Finally, it’s pretty big and I don’t take it as many places as I want to because of that.
Here are my requirements for a new digicam:
- Takes good pictures in most conditions
- Under $400. Under $300 would be great but not a requirement.
- Good battery life.
- 3x optical zoom or more.
- Smaller form factor.
I don’t really care about MP size because anything over 3MP is good enough for me I believe. I don’t really care about the time that it takes to turn on or the continuous shots functionality that much. I would like both, but they aren’t decided criteria for me. Also, memory format doesn’t matter because I’m getting a new memory card anyways. Finally, I have been happy with my Canon so another Canon would be nice, but not required.
Thanks.
Olympus Stylus 770W. It’s completely waterproof w/o any additional casing, down to 34 ft. You can drop it from 5 feet and it still works. It’s also crushproof to 220 lbs and freezeproof to 14 deg F.
Takes great pictures (7 mp I think). Has a memory stick slot. Auto shut off. 3x opitical zoom and 5x digital zoom.
The battery it comes with isn’t the best, but you can buy an upgraded battery and still come in under $400 easily. It’s also very compact. Just a little larger than a deck of cards and almost as thin as a deck of cards too.
The only drawback is the lack of view finder (some people don’t care about this feature, but I like to use it in bright sunlight when the LCD screen is a bit hard to see).
Took mine on an ocean swim this AM and got some pics of some sea turtles.

Woah! We may have a winner on the first reply! I’ll definitely check this camera out for the waterproofness. That’s awesome!
Search “digital cameras” LR forum, in May for a good thread on the subject.
