My husband is really into sports

start with gokarts, or autocrossing, its almost as fun =)
.

What’s even more fun is when you lose your oil drain plug out in the middle of the track during a shootout. Then you have to dart out and grab it in between heats, and try to dodge the fact that *your *car is the one that resulted in an oil slick on the track…

Not that I’d know or anything… ;-p

Haven’t done that, but I’ve had a coolant hose pop off mid course a couple times and dump the entire cars coolant instantly!

Fortunately in Houston it dries up in about 6 seconds =)

My wife is constantly amazed at my depth of knowledge all things sports. I will be watching a game, seemingly any game and say something just before a commentator sayd the same and she will just laugh and tell me I missed my calling.

Triathlon is never on so I don’t watch it, the Tour is the only cycling event I get into and I’ll be honest, without an American in contention I probably won’t be all that interested this year. I watch as many Cubs games as possible (I did play baseball in college), I watch a TON of football (American) since it is the greatest game ever made especially my alma mater, Iowa. I watch major golf tournaments, usually just Sunday coverage. I try to catch Bulls games when I can and when March Madness rolls around my training grinds to a halt and I do nothing but eat nachos and watch games with one hand down my pants. Yes, I am sports junkie. I am neither proud nor ashamed. I just am.

Chad, other than watching news while I eat, I never watch TV.

I guess I do watch DVD’s while I am on my trainer though to keep my mind off the pain and boredom.

There is not an American in contention for the Tour, or an American is not the outright favorite like Lance was? I think Levi has as good of a chance as most of the bunch since former winners and favorites are gone. A few years ago, if you took away Armstrong, Ulrich, and Basso, Leipheimer would have been on the podium. Those three are gone and nobody else has really come in to take a dominant position - the Astana boys (Vino & Kloeden) are looking good and have a history of strong performances but it is a big stretch to say that they knock out any contention from another group that would include Pereiro, Valverde, Leipheimer, Evans, or Rogers.

Without an abundantly clear favorite this Tour could be very exciting (unless Astana does a monster job of controlling things for Vino if he has a big day in the mountains.)

Well, I actually will be in France while the Tour is going on, hoping to catch one stage. Yes, not an American favorite, but I will root for Levi. Quite frankly, I think Discovery as a team just isn’t strong enough though.

I would argue that aside from the fact that Levi is not as strong as Lance, the team strength is pretty good - they just don’t have the mental dominance over the other teams like they had back in the day. I can see what you are saying though.

I would suggest, and every sports fan in the world would disagree with me, that it has nothing to do with mental dominance and everything to do with power and weight.

The mental dominance is a result of, and not the cause of, the physical dominance.

Watching sports is a fantasy that many men and some women have. It’s living vicariously through someone else’s efforts. I played football and got hurt, played baseball and enjoyed it, but you you need too many guys. I played basketball, but I’m white and too short… plus you need too many guys. Running, swimming, biking, hiking, surfing, skiing… these are sports you can do and they will keep you young. If you have a bunch of guys who like to play soccer, lacrosse or basketball, that’s great exercise.
It’s unfortunate that so many people waste so much of their lives watching other people do things, whether it be sports, drama, musicals, or really stupid TV like Cops, American Idol, Jerry Springer, etc. You need to ask yourself, “Will this make my life better?” Springer - NO, American Idol - NO, Cops - NO, Soap Operas - NO. Football, basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis (watched on TV for endless hours) - NO.
Don’t watch life, DO life.

what has being white got to do with basketball?

I would split hairs and say that the old team had mental dominance because Lance had physical dominance.

I don’t see any teams this year (including Disco) that is head and shoulders (mentally or physically) compared to the other teams.

To keep this on topic - I ride and like to watch cycling. I like to watch football but sucked at football as a little kid and didn’t play later.

“As for she not “getting it”, perhaps she did get your self-righteous tone of moral superiority…”

I wish I could articulate annoying human tendencies this well…full points for hitting a bullseye in as few of words as possible. You must be an amazing proposal writer…

“what has being white got to do with basketball?”

    • That and being only 6-0. White men can’t jump. It wasn’t so bad when I was younger, but these days I trip trying to hurdle the Sunday paper in the driveway. My jumpshot is still good, it’s just that I’m shooting it from a lower point and so I truly hit nothing but the bottom of the net…

I’m with you all the way! I am one of the few men I know that never watches sports on TV and doesn’t drink alcohol (never have). I wonder if my wife appreciates that or not.

I am not a native speaker, but I believe that your friend used the right way of expressing that her husband is a big sports fan.
As for she not “getting it”, perhaps she did get your self-righteous tone of moral superiority because you actually DO sports, but maybe she couldn’t be bothered in confronting you. She is canadian, after all.

OMG He Paulo out did himself on this post! If it wasn’t so long I would think about getting it tattooed where my IM tattoo will never be lol
