My husband is really into sports

…is what a woman told me the other day. When I asked her what sports he likes she said he’s really into football, basketball, hockey, baseball. When I asked her if he does any of these sports she said no, but he watches sports all the time.

She then asked me what sports I was into and when i told her triathlon, cycling, x-country skiing she looked at me like I was really weird. I then told her I prefer to do sports rather than watch them.

She just didn’t get it.

Any one else?

same

except worlds strongest man, I watch that. Because I unwilling to eat that much and do that many steroids for that many years

I don’t really understand where you are going with this. What is wrong with being a fan without being a participant in sporting events?
I guess I can’t be into movies unless I am an actor.
Can’t be into politics unless I am a politician.
Can’t be into books unless I’m an author.

if all you do is read and watch you are missing out on a lot.

im sure all of us could have had much richer lives thus far if we turned in 75% of our tv watching hours and converted that into something productive

Well I do participate in triathlons and running events, but I also am into other sporting events in which I do not participate in. In fact, I probably know and am interested a lot more about football, baseball and basketball professional sports, than I do about professional triathlon, marathoning, or track and field events.

I don’t think you have to “do” something to be “into” it… I’m into Forumula 1… don’t do it…

I understand your point, but I have to say that I have never played organized football, but I like to watch it. Hell, I just like to watch competition (shout out to Joey Chestnut).

How about 100 percent. I watch virtually no TV. Except Spongebob. That is a mainstay in the Walton house. It is amazing how early you can get up if you don’t stay up late watching bad television. Except for football I have abandoned all the sports I used to watch in my youth and early 20s.

My wife is really into sports. She loves to watch anything I do. She loves to watch football. I can not stand to watch anything.
I am glad my wife loves to watch, rather than compete. Makes life a lot easier.

I am not a native speaker, but I believe that your friend used the right way of expressing that her husband is a big sports fan.

As for she not “getting it”, perhaps she did get your self-righteous tone of moral superiority because you actually DO sports, but maybe she couldn’t be bothered in confronting you. She is canadian, after all.

Spongebob Squarepants!!!

You just can’t beat that.

This could be my husband you are describing. He LOVES college sports but didn’t play a sport in college and why he goes to swim practice with me and lifts weights, he doesn’t compete in any sport now. He and his buddy will watch any college sport, even travelled to watch the NCAA women’s softball championship although they had no former interest in softball and neither of their alma maters were still in the running. He also spends a lot of time on eBay buying old football programs and ticket stubs from games his football team (Illinois - too bad they are terrible) played against his friends teams and gives them as gifts all the time. I don’t get it but he doesn’t get why I like suffering through marathons and triathlons. We both agree to disagree as to who spends their free time in a better way. I think he’s crazy for sitting on his butt watching other people compete and he thinks I’m crazy for doing things that “hurt so much I want to cry.”

"she couldn’t be bothered in confronting you. She is canadian, after all. "

Actually she’s an immigrant from Portugal. She also tells me half your country is trying to move here.

A xenophobe remark. Nice going, Keith.

Take off eh
.

Why are the two mutually exclusive?

I do, running, cycling, swimming, triathlon.

I love to watch, hockey, soccer, cycling, the occasional football game.

Watching people who are so good at their sport they turn it in to an art form.

In July I love getting home from a long ride and then watching that day’s leg of the TDF, it gives me a far better appreciation of how good those guys really are.

I enjoy spectating anyone or group that truely have a passion for what they are doing, be it a bunch of 3 year olds chasing a soccer ball for all their worth, or a master glass blower. Top shelf NCAA sports and most Professional sports fall into this category and it really is a pleasure to watch some of these men and women move with such power, skill and grace in their chosen arena. I participate in only a fraction of the things I truely enjoy spectating because I understand that some of these people took a lifetime of pain, sufferring and sacrifice to do what they do and I have only one lifetime so I do what I can and enjoy the rest. No harm in that, and I still get plenty of exercise with Training, hunting, fishing, hiking and playing with my kids.

As for her not getting it. She gets it. Most people are painfully aware of their lack of activity and it’s effect on their body. They hate it and want to change, but inertia is a powerful thing and the ruts that people get into can be very deep. It is the rare person that can wake up one day, pull themself up by the boot straps and start the long, slow journey back to physical fitness. They don’t want to hear about it from you. It just reminds them about something they don’t need to be reminded about and most likely makes them feel worse. The easiest thing is to end the conversation with you ASAP and avoid contact with you at all cost. I’m guilty of doing the same thing a couple years ago and I now know that I drove some people away from me. Half of the people I deal with now don’t know I train. I wear loose fitting clothing to work and do most of my training in the dark, every AM and some PM after the kids go down.

Congrat’s to you for the lifestyle you have chosen. You are reaping the physicala benefits of your hard work. The people with enough initiative to climb out of life’s ruts will seek you out when it is time. The rest are content to be miserable, or simply content just to be. Allow them their happiness any way they can get it…watching sports is a common outlet. In the mean time, let your physical stature speak for you and don’t be so quick to judge others. Make someone ask multiple questions before you go all tri-geek on them. Usually the first question or two are just simple conversational pleasantries. Make sure the person really has an interest, then give them all the great reasons why they should pursue the lifestyle you have chosen. It’ll be much better received.

I’m into forumla 1, and I do race cars.

Get on that!

haha, for a non native speaker you are brilliant

I used to have this dream… I was in a McLaren in the garages in Hockenheim… and it seemed like a dream until the mechanics started it… and then I realized it wasn’t and I drove it out on the course for some laps… and there were people in the stands… I had made it… I was in Formula 1!!!

Then I woke up… and for some reason it always took me longer to realize it was a dream with that one… reality sucks
