The FD hanger has cracked at the top and as some of you happy Nemesis riders know, it’s welded the frame.
I’m considering epoxy as a patch since I don’t have a T/MIG welder handy.
Am I being stupid?
I tried to remove the FD and just go big ring for my 1/2 IM on Sunday (it’s flat enough to do this), but the chain keeps dropping w/fast pedaling/quick gear shifts.
no, it actually has a small seat cutout.
they did say it’s warrantee’d for life! - it would cost me more to get it back to them than it’s worth though…
Bummer. if i were you I’d clean all the paint off around the hanger and then throw the bike in the car and start driving to various Car Repair shops and muffler shops. Many of these guys will have welders and might even be able to work on Al (or perhaps start calling around). Also many machine shops in your area might have the equipment (although it is almost 5:00 on friday). you can also try the yellow pages and lookup welders (or even welding supply) as I’m sure you coudl find someone to tack that thing back in place.
many aluminum alloys, when welded without follow-up solution heat treatment, will be very weak. it will most certainly break again. and if you weld it, you probably lose your warranty for the rest of the frame.
if you got a full warranty, it is worth it. just ship as little of the bike as possible. strip all the easy and big parts off, and try to get them to pay for the shipping.
by the way, who is ‘they’, where do you have to send the frame?
maybe I could drop another link off, but it looks pretty good.
i did have some issues with a kinked link, so maybe that’s getting stuck and creating a hop off the r.d.
When I decided a few years ago to buy my first road bike I was considering the Motobecane via BikesDirect.com and a Cannondale. The C’Dale was considerably more expensive and I’m glad I spent the money on it. The quality of the product and the service from my LBS have been more than worth the extra cash. My buddy bought a Motobecane at the same time and his wheelset is junk, things are falling apart, etc.
Sorry you’ve had so much trouble. I really don’t like BikesDirect.com.
sorry - my subject wasn’t worded well.
my point was that with welded attachments; your opportunites are limited with repairs.
my next frame will have replaceable hanger for sure.
