My first Epic ride (w/pics)(more pics)

So, I’ve done plenty of centuries and a few weekends of back to back centuries. But never much over about 115 or so. Well, with a little encouragement from Elliott at B&L, I was set on hitting the 140 mark.

Left Solana beach this morning, headed south up torrey pines, and down to La Jolla Village drive. Then it was over to the 67 and out to Dudleys Bakery. Stopped off there for a few, had a couple cookies, pretty good. Then it was off to Palomar Mountain. Headed back towards Escondido after Palomar, and back across Del Dios into Solana.

I know that route isn’t 140. But, getting lost a few times after losing my route sheet early on helped get the mileage I wanted too. I had a mini mental break down in the middle of the day. I realized I lost my route sheet and was in the middle of no where, where 79 and 76 split apart. I forgot to turn off onto 76, and after about 5 miles or so, I started thinking maybe I was going the wrong way. Well, cell service is sketchy at best out there, and I finally got a signal, and called my dad back in florida, took forever to explain to him where I was and what I was looking for. But, finally got it all figured out. A little excitement never hurts, right? Total time was right at 10 hours. I am pretty happy with myself. I’ve never spent that much time on a bike before or climbed that much for that matter. I have a few more pics besides these, but photo bucket is working right now for some reason, I’ll add them later. Oh and if someone could post them properly for me, I have a mac and still haven’t figured out how to post, if I can? thanks

where is the second picture taken from? Do you end up riding all the way up that road ahead? It looks like it climbs all the way up. Pretty cool looking shot.

The second pick is on 67, I think? Yea, the road goes allll the way up. Fun climb.

I think I speak for most Ohioians when I say I am jealous of your roads. I might kill a man to ride on something that smooth.

Just shows that everything is relative. Living in Nor Cal, when I see those shots, I’m reminded why I haven’t moved back down there. It’s ugly!

Actually, where I live in Ohio it is very beautiful (West Akron). I live on the outskirts of a national park where I do the majority of my miles. That said, the combination of road salt, snow, and ice, lead to jagged roads and minefields of potholes.

When they repave sections of the roads, it is heaven. That is, for a few miles, until it is back to the taint-jarring misery.

Thanks for posting the pics for me.

I know Ohio is beautiful – I’m referring to So Cal as ugly. Yuck. Pity it’s where the action is (and fam/friends).

Yea, he’s pretty funny. He started telling me to do rides like this if I wanted to do good at IMFL this year. At first I thought he was nuts. Now I am pretty sure I am nuts for doing the ride.
