My First DNF (2)

Hi gang,

It has been a while. Some of you might remember I was the guy I got the bike from Tibbs, “The Giant”, and did my first Ironman in Nov 05’ Well, after that race, I signed up and did another half last summer, then basically sat on my butt for a while and barely trained.

This june, I tried to do my 3rd HIM, but had to DNF after I was cramping on mile 54 of the bike. I kept going on the run, but 1.5 miles in, I just said screw it and had to turn around. I was a moron and didn’t eat breakfast that day. Could I have finished? Maybe, I could have beat the 8hr cut-off, but it still doesn’t excuse the fact I blew off a lot of my training.

At any rate, this is more or less a public confession. And I vow to make sure I don’t let this happen again.

Trae.

PS. I am signed up for IMFL 07 and have gotten my mind right and am pumped and ready to train!

Hey Trae, don't beat yourself up too much.Sometimes it takes a reality check in a race like you got to shift your focus back to training again.Find a fun bunch of people to train with and don't put any pressure on yourself.Your fitness will come back.Good luck to you.

hey, it’s about you, not us.
so maybe aplogoize to yourself, and gut check what you’ve been doing. perhaps train more for the joy of it, and that will get you more successful race days.

True, I did have to apologize to myself.

Anyhoo, I’m pumped for IMFL. I think the thing I need to start figuring out is, How do you come off of an Ironman distance race, after training and NOT fall back onto the couch. That’s where I never want to end up again. I want to end with my race and then keep going strong.

I know you guys will help me figure it out

Sign up for another race!

I’d have to second Cathy’s advice. For me, signing up for races, centuries, etc is like the carrot dangling in front of the horse. If there were no carrot, this horse probably wouldn’t move near as much.

exactly!
races are what gives me the purpose to get my butt out there and train. if i’m not racing, or have one all lined up the future, forgettaboutit.

It is ok to take a break… But if you have a hard time getting off the couch, maybe you overtrain? or maybe it is not that much fun for you?

Cheers,
Fred.
