My first Crash - Now with pictures of the carnage

Group ride, second from the front, I go over a bump, my front wheel comes off. Next thing I know Im on my butt taking stock.

Result: Small egg on the side of my face - Thank you Bell Helmets
Some minor abrasions to my ankle, back and shoulder.
Sore hand

And the kicker: Grade four separation of my achromio-clavicular bone - basicly wher the collor bone attaches to the shoulder has no more ligaments or tendons holding it in place.

I have to see an orthopod tomorrow to determine if surgery is the best option (most likely).

Anybody know a good sports medicine doc in detroit?

Cracked helmet. that chunk is almost dislodged from the rest of the foam and the outside has some deep scratches.

I’m not usually this lopsided. No that is not swelling, that is the bone poking up from my right shoulder.

A little road rash, but not too bad…

For those that asked about the bike: The front wheel is toast, and the shifters are really scratched up, but everything else is intact it seems. Gotta love Ti

Wow, hope you heal soon.

Any idea how your front tire came off?

Dave

It blows my mind when I see people riding their bike without wearing a helmet. I’ve saved my skull a few times with mine, and just never know when you’re going to crash.

Hope you heal well.

Ouch! Good news is that AC separations usually don’t require surgery. But, you get to joint the “quasimodo” club with your new lump that you likely have! Glad you are OK though!

Yeah you see i really want to go into a doctor sometime and just have him go you are really fucked up

Hope you get better soon. Its frustrating and annoying when it happens. But it will get better.

Grant

interestingly enough i had been hearing a distinct rattle coming from my bike in th minutes before it happened. as it turned out, it was th sound of my front skewer rattling loose. The last time i put the wheel on i must not have used enough tension to keep it secure.

I have heard stories about front wheels coming off, but never heard from a person having it happen. Glad you were not hurt more.
I know since I move my wheels around a lot, I try to be very careful to make sure they get tight. No way do I want an issue
flying down the hills at 45 mph…

Dave

It’s in NY and not Detroit, but some of the best doctors anywhere are at the Hospital for Special Surgery. I had a plate put in my shoulder there and wouldn’t go anywhere else. For what it’s worth, nearly everyone I speak with in the waiting room has flown in from around the country to go there (some at the recommendation of their local doctor who says they can’t handle the complexity of the injury). I just was lucky and live locally.

If you think your shoulder is bad, and you have the means, I wouldn’t hesitate to go there.

GOOD LUCK!

I posted this on another thread a while back, but will admit that my crash was caused by my own idiocy. I had ridden the day before and because of that, I just grabbed my bike and went (with a helmet of course). About 40 miles into my ride, there is an area with a pretty severe bump in the road that, given the road is slightly downhill, you can hop over at about 25 mph. So I ready myself to hop the bump, pull my bike up, and that is the last thing I remember. The day before when I had got home I took my front wheel off to check out some rattling in the hub, and when I put it back on, I didn’t secure the quick release. So at 25 mph, when I pulled up on my bike, my front wheel came off and I went forehead first into the pavement. No broken bones, but helluva lot of road rash on my face and shoulder and a puncture under my eye and under my nose. Helmet destroyed cracking on the front and right side, which would have been my skull without it. Needless to say, I would not be here without a helmet.

Sorry to hear someone else go through it. Sounds like you made out a lot better than I did. I was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. Some funny stories out of it though. When the ambulance arrived, they stabilized my neck and put me on the spine board thing. They kept asking me questions about the crash and I kept nodding or shaking my head when I answered, which completely defeated the purpose of the stabilization. The EMT kept angrily telling me to stop moving my head. Then, after I was stitched and cleaned up, I walked out into the waiting room of the ER where my family was waiting and the triage nurse called me over. Mind you, I hadn’t seen myself at this point, so I had no idea how bad I looked. Anyway, I walked over and she asked me if I had been seen by a doctor yet. Guess I looked pretty bad, which was confirmed when I got home and looked in the mirror.

Man do I know about the one second you remember things, and the next you do not.

This was me after getting home from my bike crash at vineman in 2004. Broken collar bone,
concussion, broke rib, road rash. I do not remember more than a few seconds on of the next 3 hours
when I was taken to the hospital in the ambulance.

Again, we are both lucky. I know I have had baby turkeys run out in front of me this year going down
hills fast. Just this morning riding and down fast down a hill, gues what, someones loose dog
just about runs in front of me.

Just a thought – did you file off the “lawyer tabs” on your fork?

My friend had the same incident happen to him - front wheel came off his road bike.

He punctured his carotid artery on the way down, though, and nearly died. Recovery took a long time.

But he rides again - and so will you.

Nope, the tabs are still in place. the skewer inquestion has a really long throw, and I’ve always been able to remove the wheel w/o spinning the skewer open. Funny, I used to think that this wa a really cool feature.

I’m starting to get some mixed over the phone diagnosis from some med people I know and it looks like I’m going to need surgury and a lengthy recovery. It is not certain yet, but it looks like no more IMFL :frowning:

The reason I asked is that maybe you tightened the skewer on the tabs, and it popped into the actual dropout when you weighted it. In that case, the tabs were the safety defect, not the skewer.

never really thought of that. That may have been the case. i had carried my bike up from the basement and was about 30 miles into the ride when i started to the the rattle. I thought that it was a bolt in my whater bottle cage come loose, but i’l never mistake that noise again.

Bummer to hear! Hope you heal quickly.

Probably an impossibility, but any chance that you used a skewer made for the rear wheel on your front?

Sorry to hear about the need for surgery/recovery. I didn’t read your first post completely.

I missed the following:

“And the kicker: Grade four separation of my achromio-clavicular bone - basicly wher the collor bone attaches to the shoulder has no more ligaments or tendons holding it in place.”

Good luck in your recovery and I hope you can do it without surgery.

Jeff

I thought that was weird when you took off and replaced the wheel without spinning it down. I think I’ll save my Shimano skewers if I ever get rid of my Giant. More useful info: http://sheldonbrown.com/skewers.html. Sorry to hear about your wreck. Hopefully you can recover in time for FL. Lots of one-arm swimming drills? Your sister must be busy giving out free medical advice. Most importantly, how’s the bike?

I feel your pain but I might have ya beat. http://www.flickr.com/photos/gottlieb/sets/72157600393663607/
