Talked to Greg and Laura Bennett for a while this weekend, mostly Greg. Talk about nice, humble, and yet dominating on the course people. They go out and destroy people, yet remain extremely humble, instantly taking the focus off themselves and asking how everyone else’ races went in conversation. No vibe of I’m ‘above’ you like you get with some others at the top. Mr Bennett you get my vote for Mr. nice guy. This type of person always impresses me more than all the others.
Well I’m glad I cheered so much for both of them! Laura kicked butt both days and Greg as well but really dominated the Sprint!
Most of the tri pro’s are very much like this,Alexander,Cunnigham,Golnick, etc, all really nice people. You will find much bigger ego’s and sour attitudes in many mediocre local athletes.
I agree 100%, met the both of them at Kona Expo last year. Talked with me for 10 minutes and really came across as nice, genuine people.
Thanks for your kind words and enjoy Denver! You’ll need to make your way out to Boulder for some training.

This claim really bothers me. You see it in supermarket tabloids all the time: “actress so-and-so remains pleasantly down to earth and has a rare intelligence, unlike so many in her industry”. I **never **read about just who the people are that are supposed to be arrogant jerks. Well, OK, almost never for hollywood, but for triathlon, never. I have a strong suspicion that you simply cannot be an elite athlete and an arrogant jerk - each trait conflicts in a number of important ways with the other. But instead of just congratulating Greg on being a nice person, you had to insinuate that you know other “top” athletes who are all about being “above you”. Do you actually know specific individuals that you believe this applies to, or are you just hand waving?

As an aside I don’t know any pro triatheletes, I have read about other top level athletes and know of friends who have met some who are complete jerks. Nelson Piquet is a good example, great race car driver, but its well documented his team hated him.
ALSO I know of at least one local guy who places pretty highly at every event who is a complete d-bag according to a friend who had a couple encounters with him at the pool. Yet he has a crew who follows his every word…
Its very possible.
life is like that, you get twats and really cool people in all walks of life, why should tri be any different
.
I met Greg and Laura several years ago in Bermuda. I was just getting into the sport and had no real idea who they were. They came out to talk with our local tri club and give some training tips. I only spent 5 minutes talking to them, but I had such a favorable impression of both of them. Once I learned about how big they were in the sport (rising stars at the time), I was even more impressed at how down to earth they were/are. I’ve been a fan ever since.
