NOTHING beats raw American Iron–nothing! Today, I was driving down the freeway when some chump in a white GT3000 tried to mix it up with me. His miso fueled V6 with twin “turbos” (hairdryers, really) was no match for my '91 Cam once that naturally aspirated V8 roared to life. I was well past 125 and Nancy-boy in the Mitsu was still looking for another gear! I looked for him in my rearview mirror, but he was so far back it was hard to make him out…
wow, street racing, that ranks right up there with riding on the wrong side of the road, w/o a helmet, while cranking an Ipod on the stupidity scale. Save that shit for the drag strip before you kill somebody. By the way, a buck-an-a-quarter ain’t that impressive. My Mopar runs 8.50’s @ 155 mph in the 1/4 mile.
Sorry, you’re new here. I posted this because me and Record10Carbon (who used to be Record9ti) have a running joke based on my love for F-bodies (which he hates). Chip owns a GT3000 TT. Record has been MIA for a day or two so I posted the above post in a humorous attempt to draw him out. In three years, he has never–I mean never, passed a chance to trash on me and my Camaro.
OK, I’ll bite since I hate F-bodies as well (although I’ve only owned one: a 1988 Firebird Formula 350 with a rare 5-spd.)
I’m not really a Japanese car fan either, although I currently own 3 (not sure how that happened). Acura MDX for the wife/kids, Infiniti FX45 for me in the winter and to haul the bike(s), RX-8 now for fun (just replaced a BMW M3-E46).
I mainly prefer German autos, but they are most certainly not worth their price of entry (after sampling VW, Audi, BMW and Mercedes).
I really want to be excited about an American car again, but I’m having a hard time. I almost went with the new Caddy CTS-V with the LS6 engine or a GTO, but just couldn’t get over the interior and overall package. I am the perfect target demographic for these cars (young, lots of disposable income, previous German and Japanese sports sedan buyer) and they still failed (although they drew me into a Cadillac dealership - I almost had to take some Benadryl to calm the hives).
I really like the RX-8. It looks awesome, inside and out with a 2 tone red/black leather. My kids can still ride in back with the “suicide” doors (although that was not needed since I have other vehicles).
The handling of the car is superb - right up there with the M3. Actually, CAR magazine (Australia I think) had an identical time around a race course with an E46 M3 and an RX-8. That tells me the RX-8 probably handles a bit better since the M3 is MUCH faster on the straights.
It does take getting used to the lack of torque and the almost jet engine/golf cart like noise of the rotary (redline at almost 9K!) After having all kinds of powerful cars and the like, this one just satisfies me. Perfect size, feel, look etc (and cheap to boot). Also relatively rare on the streets (at least around here). Can NOT drive this in the winter though. I have a silly grin on my face almost every time I drive this thing. Been looking into a turbo to fix the car’s only weakness, but I’m in no hurry. NO comparison with an Evo VIII (in both speed, daily driving, looks inside and out). I really didn’t enjoy my test drive in the Evo and couldn’t figure out what all the hoopla was about (although the initial turn in/bite of the front wheels was about as good as I’ve ever experienced).
I’ll play to since i hate f-bodies as well. And If you cant tell what i have or like from my screen name then your no car lover. Its somewhere in the high 10’s-low 11’s. My only problem with it is i cant afford it. i am young but dont seemto be infected with disposable income like some others. I cant afford to put gas in it and keep it insured so it just sits. really depressening. I drive a nissan 200sx auto which if i turn the ac off it FEELS like nitrous lol.
Big deal. My buddy runs a Honda civic with ONE “hairdryer” in the mid 8 sec 1/4 mile. Granted it is a HUGE turbo, has an enerygy management system from heck, leaves the line at 26-28lbs of boost and is in the mid 30s by the time he hist third gear, but it still is “just a four cyclinder”.
How do you know it wasn’t less a case of his car being weaker, but more of him wanting to live?
Jeezus people, it was a troll to get Chip stirred up (and hopefully convey some luv in a unique sorta way) thus getting him to respond. I got rid of the Camaro in October of '01 and thus, I was not racing for real. Yes-yes -yes bitches, I know that there are a lot of well tuned machines that can eat a naturally aspirated Detroit V8 for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Get over it.

oh please. post up pics and timeslips. your buddy does not have a civic that runs mid 8’s unless you are talking 1/8 mile.
Tell you what, go to www.ssc-das.com, then if you STILL don’t believe me-website needs a little updating, call the shop, ask whoever answers the phone if they have heard of me, Jeff Suever. (you can check my profile for my email). Then ask them to put you through to Joe and ask him. Loser publicly apologizes and buys the winner a P3 carbon. Last year he was the only guy to beat the team sponsored by a turbo company(granted, he only beat them once and they cleaned his clock the next time-lol).
That’s fine, I will apologize right now. I used to run a 9.50 mustang and know the $$$$ and resources that go into that kind of fast. Though he probably doesnt have much a “civic” anymore with the full chassis and (probably) changing to RWD etc. Maybe some sheetmetal and the block are all that are left from the original car?
Actually, still front wheel drive. Wheelie bars work wonders to keep the fron tires on the ground. Although one of the other teams donated a used tranny to him. Value? $30k. It will still take another 6-8k to make it work. I’ll stick to bikes…
He does have(had?) a street legal one with a big stereo that would run in the 10 sec range. I think he robbed some parts off that one though.
