Yesterday morning I came outside to discover that my car had been broken into and my Ritchey BreakAway road bike and Felt TK2 Track bike were stolen along with a duffle bag full of vendors product sample and prototypes. Also, the most sentimental of these items, my old ratty basketball with 1000s of hours on her.
Please keep your eBay eyes peeled for the following:
And my track bike, I’m the schmuck in the middle:
Both bikes are very unique in their build. I could spot them even if they were painted or whatever. I do have the serial numbers and just hope that the kids that made off with them try to sell them.
My basketball is an old Spaulding Indoor Leather ball with the narrow channels, she’s gone I’m afraid:
The duffle bag had all sorts of stuff in it, some prototype Ritchey pedals, carbon handlebars, carbon frame pumps, carbon bottle cages, a SHAIN helmet, Briko glasses, pair of Tufo Tires, just random service parts like brake pads and cables sets.
GRRR…alot of the components on the road bike have been collected over a few years or are one-offs and would likely be impossible to replace or very very difficult at this point.
I’m deeply sorry for your loss. No offense, but why would you leave stuff that valuable to you in your car overnight? I’m very protective of my stuff and I won’t even keep my bike locked to my bike rack on my car for more than a few hours.
Once again, sorry for your bike getting stolen. I can only imagine the emptyness in your stomach when you discovered it.
I was leaving around 6:30 am for an early ride. I packed the car the night before so I didn’t wake the kids and dog as I tip toed out to the car.
The basketball is always in the car, it is good stress relief when I get parked in traffic to get out and just dribble up and down the freeway shoulder, or when I cruise through Detroit and other urban areas to stop at the old parks and get into pick up games.
A brand spanking NEW pair of Zipp carbon rims were in the back seat of the car as well. They left them there.
I guess I’m a bit naive when it comes to protecting my stuff. I just assumed it would be ok locked in my car overnight.

This shows they know nothing about what they stole. I would have taken the rims and left the bikes, harder to trace. Check local pawn shops i bet the bikes show up.
There are few things in life that make you as angry as people stealing your stuff! Was your car outside? You might want to take a few minutes to call some pawn shops and I assume you have called the police already. I know that here pawn shops are supposed to run new items against a database but who knows if they do. Might be worth a call to a few and tell them you will pay them a reward if they get them back? Anyone who has had stuff taken (I had a car stolen) knows how you feel, sorry.
I say this as my Felt TK2 sits in my car (LO LO - Acura MDX since you are so interested in the size of cars!). And it sat in my car outside last night.
My wife told me the other day how I had left the garage door open (again!). I have had a bad habit of not locking my bikes and wheels up in the garage, a small fortune at that - at least to me.
Dave, Sorry about your misfortune. Take heart in the good that will come of it as you have reminded us all not to take the safety of our valuables for granted. I hope you catch the scum bag that stole the mechandise. I think the death penatly would not be severe enough.

Sounds like he/they were in and out of the vehicle in a matter of minutes! A sugggestion for the future, the more difficult you make it for the thief, the less likley the thief is to try and snatch your stuff. Not going to help in this instance, but I suggest that once you replace the bike, consider purchasing one or two Kryptonite cables (either 6’ or 9’ stranded, security cables) with the new style security locks which can be looped through the bikes making it that much harder for the thief. Granted that when a thief wants something bad enough, they will find a way to get it, but with the stranded cables, even the best of bolt cutters will take repeated passes to cut through the stranded bundles of cable (a hack saw is even worse) which increases the thiefs exposure and making the prize much less attractive. Also, if a thief has no idea whats inside, they are even less likley to try and break in so consider getting a cheap cotton canvas paint tarp (we use a cheap fleece throw) to cover up the stuff in the car hiding it from view.
I think I saw that ball this AM at the YMCA…I will go back and call the police to investigate.
Sorry for your loss - been there, sucks more that they were one off bikes and certainly not something you can just go out and by today. Good luck with the insurance company (boy I hope you have insurance).
Dave
Of all the things that they left behind I’m happy they left the wheels. If you want a bike just call. And by the way you missed a sweet ride last night.
