My Bike Fit Experience with Paul Levine (long)

First a little background. I was post fit by John Cobb 2 1/2 years ago. Since then I’ve done 2IMs and many other shorter races. Over time I have been feeling less and less comfortable on my bike. In fact, that could have been one of the causes of a recent problem I’ve had with prostatitis. I’ve been off of the bike for 3 months because of it and just got back on 2 weeks ago. I am doing IMUSA in 11 weeks. I needed to find a position that was powerful, aero and most importantly, relieved pressure from my perenium as much as possible.

I took a day off from work and drove 290 miles to see Paul. When I arrived, 20 minutes late (sorry Paul), I was welcomed in to his house/office. You should also know that I drove in with my yellow lab and that she was also welcome. Paul even gave her water - no charge!

For 3hrs, I was measured, stretched, measured again, put on the bike, taken off of the bike, measured again, asked detailed questions about my sporting background, my strengths, weaknesses, goals, future races, problem areas, etc. I was constantly asked for feedback as he slowly tweaked my position which is great because no matter how good I look to a fitter, if I’m not comfortable than it doesn’t matter.
Paul even called an MD friend while I was there to talk about some of my unusual muscle imbalances.

Ultimately, my seat was raised, my stem changed, my arm rests moved further out and more. The coolest thing were these lasers that were pointed at me to see where my arms were in relation to my thighs. I think the point being, the arms can be as far out as possible for balance and stability, as long as they don’t go outside of the thigh line for aerodynamic sake.

Paul also suggested I get rigid sole orthotics for my cycling shoes as I pronate. He uses them and noticed an immedite 20 watt improvement. Needless to say, I’m getting them.

I left feeling much more comfortable and much more powerful. I rode for 3hrs on the CT the next day with no discomfort. Tomorrow will be my maiden voyage outside and I can’t wait to test it out.

This guy is the real deal. I think you’d be hard pressed to find someone else who knows more about bike fit and can articulate it as well as he does. Plus he’s a nice guy. I highly recommend Paul Levine. God, that sounded like a letter of recommendation. Paul get’s along well with others and shares his toys…

I’ll second the great experience with Paul. I saw him a couple of weeks ago and I was late too (sorry) but he took his time talking and explaining his thoughts. He put on a real shorty stem but as we both knew, my bike is too long for me. He did make some seat adjustments and I’m feeling my glutes a helluva lot more on the flats than I ever did before. Its great. Now all I have to do is save up some dough and get myself that custom Serotta Coeur D’Acier that was on his wall… and even though I have Guru, Marinoni, Argon 18 in my backyard I won’t hesitate to drive the 6 hrs down to NY and have Paul design that custom Serotta designed for me, myself and I. Thanks.

I’m getting ready to purchase a new Litespeed Siena. I’ve never had a professional fit experience but was seriously considering making an appointment to see him.

Do you think it’s worthwhile to go before I buy - so he’ll recommend stem length, bar width, etc? Do you think he’ll mostly just apply pressure for me to buy a Serotta?

Sorry, let me clarify, my desire for the serotta is self inflicted. Its just a gorgeous bike and I got a taste of what it would be like if the bike fit me. Regular frames don’t (my legs are proportionally longer than my torso).

If you’re not too far from Paul I would definitely recommend seeing him. Not to recommend stem length etc. but rather to see if the bike will work for you. The only reason he deals exclusively with Serotta is because that is who he trusts for the perfect fit/ride - I think his reputation relies on them so he goes with who he can trust. He knows the other brands out there, so don’t worry he won’t pressure you but will be able to help. I say go for it. We all have different bodies, quirks, and his knowledge and experience can possibly save you from spending a chunk of money on a bike that doesn’t fit (like I did). Give him a buzz.

I doubt that he would push anything on you, but I would call and ask his opinion. 845-928-3060.

I don’t know Paul and (unfortunately) have never met him. However, I doubt the man will “pressure” you into buying a Serotta for any reason other than best fit.

Here is a man who has devoted his professional life to improving understanding of bike fit. His qualifications may establish him as the premier bike fitter in the world, and certainly among the best without doubt.

If Paul Levine fit me and told me to buy a Serotta, I would buy a Serotta. And I do not sell them in my store so I would have nothing to gain from it except better bike fit.

I totally concur with your experience with Paul. His skill as a bike fitter is without question. I would also add that his character is withou question as well.

As another person was worried about with him possibly pushing a serotta onto you I can say almost positively that he woud not do such a thing.

I was fit onto my road bike I then asked him to fit me on the size cycle to find the ideal tri bike. He gave me all of my measures. He only laid Serotta out as one of my options. He offerred to help me choose out a bike at a later time if I so wanted…

If he ever tried to “sell” you something it would definately be something that you actually needed.

on a slightly different note… Herschel was Paul able to set you up with people to ride with in Westchester?

{on a slightly different note… Herschel was Paul able to set you up with people to ride with in Westchester?} reply

He gave me some options but because I’ve been off the bike for so long (3 months) I was hesitant to jump in a strong group like his for fear of getting dropped in the middle of nowhere. Hence the 3hr CT ride in my mom’s living room. Oh well.

Just wanted to chime in with more praise of Paul’s abilities. I had my new tri bike re-fit by Paul a couple months ago and soonafter dropped 4 minutes from my 40K time. Paul took a ton of time going over my history (back problems from my days of contact sports) explaining his philosophy (bascially you need to be totally comfortable to go totally fast) and the reasoning behind his alterations to my set up. As a result of my re-fit I am probably slightly less aero but ALOT more comfortable and as a result measurably faster. The experience was very educational and really reinforced what alot of folks have said repeatedly on this site: a top notch bike fit is the single most valuable thing to spend your money on if you want to go as fast as your abilities will allow.

Paul was also a real nice guy to deal with. To re-fit me, Paul had to swap out my aerobars and stem but was still able to get the bike back to me in a couple days for an upcoming race. I will without question have my next bike (a new road bike this fall, hopefully) fit by Paul.

Where is he located? Web site? Thanks

Paul is in Central Valley, NY - about 45 min north of Manhattan. www.signaturecycles.com

I’ve had the pleasure of being a fit instructor with him at the Serotta fitting school for several years now and can’t say enough good things about him.

I appreciate your “letters of recommendations”

I would like to make it clear that, as Tom D. states, “devoted his professional life to improving understanding of bike fit”, that I am not an island and am not exclusive in search for the science behind positioning an athlete to be most efficient on a bicycle.

Anyone who has taken my courses knows that there is one common thread that runs through all of them: “To be the best bike fitter you can be you need to know your limitations. We are professionals, not experts. The difference is that an expert knows all the answers and a professional knows where to find them.”

I have had the luxury to surround myself with a few of the best professionals inside and outside of the industry. The MD Hershel refers to that I contacted during his fit session is Dr. David Berkoff. Dr. Berkoff practices at Duke University and runs the cycling physio-lab. He attended both my courses and operates the best bike fitting service in North Carolina and the surrounding areas. I would highly recommend any athlete in his area to take advantage of his expertise.

I refer out to Dr. Pam Wilson, the finest Kinesiologist in the Northeast. Dr. Wilson instructs at our school and has taken the industry’s best fitters and has elevated their understanding of biomechanics and taught us how each athlete must be studied as an individual, without any preconceived agenda, to best maximize their performance potential.

I frequently seek counsel with Christopher Kautz, PK Racing. Christopher instructs with me and in my opinion is the best resource for aerodynamic data and TT positioning. Is reputation in the industry is surpassed by no one individual. He recently opened a new bike fitting facility in the San Francisco area that is state of the art.

The long and short of this response is that a bike fitter is only as good as their resources. Bike fitting is a new science, where a very few individuals have devoted their full time in understanding what it takes to maximize any athlete’s potential. Most bike fitting “experts” have worked with the best athletes in the world and have little experience with the MOPer. Us MOPers are still riding bicycles, while the best athletes in the world are playing a whole other game. The rules are different and so should be the strategy.

I guess I forgot to add, he’s very modest as well.

This morning, I was scheduled to ride for 60 minutes but I felt so good in my new position, I went for 90. The difference was obvious. I was more comfortable, more powerful and as a result, faster. Another noticeable difference was my confidence on descents. Normally, I’m a little reserved on the downhills but because of my arms being further out I felt more stable and therefore more confident. Aero wheels, helmets, ets are nice but a proper bike fit beats all.

Herschel34,

I couldn’t agree with you more! Proper fit makes it all right! It amuses me to see cyclists spending thousands of dollars on bicycles and yet they are in the dark as to the importance of fit to cycling pleasure, power and efficiency.

Unfortunately, I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Paul Levine or being fitted by him. I have previously been fitted by people schooled in the Serotta Fit School. And the bicycle I purchased “disappeared” underneath me when I rode it. It became an extension of my body and a part of me, not something I was sitting on. I was almost as if it was a thoroughbred. It was going for a fast and exciting ride and I was welcome to come along.

I have since had the pleasure of being fitted by Grant Salter from Continental Bike Shop in Hazel Park, MI. He is a graduate of the Serotta Advanced Fit Training Seminar. Paul Levine heaped a load of praise on Grant in a previous thread. Although I have not received my new bike yet, I know it will exceed my expectations! There is just no way it cannot when a fitter is so meticulous about taking into account the many variables that play a part in the biomechanics of each individual’s cycling.

I can hardly wait! I hope you enjoy your new ride as much as I have enjoyed my properly fitted bikes and the one that is on the way. Maybe we’ll see each other on the road sometime. It would be a great place to meet.

Hey Wants2rideFast, my buddy just got fit by Grant and had a similarly great experience. He also ives in MI (not sure where) and is training for IMUSA. If you’re looking for a riding partner, I could hook you guys up. Let me know…

Herschel34,

I’m just a cyclist, not a triathlete. I did spectate at the Nankin Mills duathlon though, and I have to confess that the experience did awaken some competitive juices. I used to run competitively in junior high school, senior high school and college. I have always thought I was burned out on running.

I live in a western suburb of Detroit.

Thanks Ben for the reply. Your bike will be here shortly. I again as I said in my last thread I would like to thank Paul, Christopher, and Pam they have given me one of the most useful tools in my career. Also I just did a seminar at Oakland University and was wondering if any other clubs in the Detroit area would be interested in a Fitting Seminar. Please e-mail me if interested. gksalter@wowway.com, or call 248-545-1225(Continental Bike Shop).

Paul,

I am in Wilmington NC and would like very another bike fit. Could you give the information on how to contact Dr David Berkoff at Duke. Thanks.

Jamie

Just to throw my hat into the ring and give another endorsement of Paul. I have had two bikes fitted by Paul and my wife has also been fitted on two bikes, one being a custom Serotta. Paul is amazingly comprehensive, and spends all the appropriate time you need. Recently I was having problems with some soreness based on the bars I was using. I went up to see Paul, changed the bars, and while I only have a few rides on the new bars, it seems like problem solved.

In an industry where supposedly everyone is an expert, it is nice to have a resource where everything makes sense, and is scientifically sound. Paul, gives a custom fit to everyone, and I would highly recommend his services or any service he recommends.

Just wanted to give another endorsement,

Neal Dunn

Paul Levine has literally kept me from giving up my sport (triathlon) because of his bike fitting abilities, so I will be forever grateful  . Aside from his bike fitting, he is also an amazing human being who truly wants you to be happy with not only the fit of your bike, but the overall outcome of that bike fitting in all areas: comfort, speed, aerodynamics for you as an individual, and the hard to wipe off your face smile that comes while riding any bike that Paul has fit you on. When I went to see Paul, I had only one bike in mind to buy, a Quintana Roo Typhoon. Paul put so much care and time in fitting me (including listening to me whine about all me previous bike experiences) and never once mentioned Serotta as an option. His main focus was on what position was going to make me a great rider with ultimate comfort on whatever new trusty steed I chose. I actually went home from the fitting and received a detailed fax from Paul showing all the measurements of the Quintana Roo Typhoon, and yes, it was going to work for me. He had even called the company to ask some very specific questions about the geometry to make sure it was definitely the bike for me. In the end, I purchased a Serotta. I really came to trust Paul, what can you say about an individual who just wants the best for you and never once tried to pressure me into buying a Serotta. I figured the closest I could ever come to perfection on a bike was one that was built just for me. So I am extremely happy with my bike, you will know me if you are in my area riding, I am the one charging up the hills whooping and shouting out for joy because I just can’t control my happiness on my beautiful new bike! There is only one word for Paul “guru” Levine - amazing! So what are ya’ waiting for - go and see, “the man.”
