They’ve been touted on this site for a while but I only recently picked up a set. I have been experiencing some pain on the inside of my right knee. I noticed that when climbing my knee would make a noticable “tick” inward at the top of my pedal stroke. I picked up these shims, installed 2mm worth and immediately the knee motion was drastically reduced. I need to add another mm or 2 to have things completely eliminated. I was totally amazed at how much of a difference the 2mm worth of shims made. I am now way more comfortable on the bike. For a little over $20, this has to be the best bang for the buck upgrade I’ve ever made.
For me, the best thing I ever bought was my floor/track pump. It cost $70 and has lasted three years now…got the dual attachment presta/schrader thing, and I just love it!
My foot naturally “hangs” so that my pinky toe is lower than my big toe. So I put the shims on to support my foot the way it’s naturally oriented. The thick side of the shim is on the inside of my foot.
Which side and how many shims depends on your own feet. Yeah, $20 is kinda steep for a bunch of thin plastic strips but if they prevent pain, I think it’s worth it. Lots more bang for the buck than a $1200 wheelset that ~might~ make me 30 seconds faster.
1986 Silca track pump. just replace the leather washer (50 cents) and the rubber crack pipe valve grommet ($1.00) every year. i actually pimp it out in the transition area at the races 'cause it can easily inflate a disc wheel beyond 170 psi.
