i did a 5 hour trainer ride 2 weeks ago. Ever since that ride my ass has been hurting. It’s made every ride I’ve done since suck. I’ve done long trainer rides before with no problem. But, it has me a little worried. With IMF around the corner I don’t want to be feeling that way again after the bike. The last thing I want is to start the run feeling like I just rode the seat post.
So, I’m taking my bike to the shop for the once over before I leave for florida. Should I ask them to put a different/comfortable saddle on? Or should I hope that that ride was a fluke and bet it won’t happen again?
I don’t WANT to change anything before the big day… but, I’m worried about this stinkin saddle.
FWIW, I think the trainer is a little harder on your ass than the road. Please don’t be offended, but was that your longest training ride for IMFL? If so, it may not be the saddle, it may be that your ass has just not gotten used to that distance yet, regardless of what saddle you are on.
i wore the same shorts… didn’t do anything differently. my position was the same. that’s why it has me worried.
i’m not offended by the comment… that was not my longest ride for IMF. i’ve done 5 rides that were between 5-6 hours. never had a problem with the saddle before.
Did’ja use any chamois creme? That stuff is a godsend. Personally, I find that my ass gives out much quicker on the trainer vs. the road. Don’t sweat it…have a great race.
My longest ride before my first IM was 120 miles, 2nd longest 100 miles…big mistake. I don’t train by hours…haven’t figured out why people do that. Anyway, if it is the “sit” bones then it is likely because when you are on the road there are numerous spots where you are off the seat, either climbing hills, stopped at a light, checking out the squirrel you just decapitated, etc. Other than checking the shorts to make sure they aren’t really worn out, and the same with the padding in the seat, I wouldn’t worry about it. OTOH I don’t have a solution for butt soreness. Call the doc the Jerky Boys called…he can help!
you do have a point there. there are a lot of times when i’m standing up when i’m out on the road. that helps thinking like that. the shorts seem fine… so, does the saddle. as for my butt i’ve been givin it a rest. haven’t done much biking since and the biking i’ve done i’ve used some extra cushion.
I’ve used Chamois Butt’r, Body Glide and Bag Balm - all work just fine. If your LBS doesn’t carry the Butt’r, head for Walgreen’s and pick up some Bag Balm - stuff is dirt cheap (~$7 a tin) and works great. It comes in a cube-shaped green tin. Just slather it liberally on the pad of your shorts - make sure to hit the seams around the pad, too. If friction is the source of your discomfort, that should do the trick.
I keep my eye on my watch and punch it every fifteen minutes. That is my signal to hydrate, take nutrition, “salt” pill and COME OUT OF THE SADDLE for about a minute. Or come out every 7.5 minutes. It breaks the ride up, gives you something to do, etc. I have a times that keep my heart rate and laps, splits, so I have record of what my heart was doing by fifteen minute intervals. Sometimes its over/under 15, but I adjust it back, and make the next one shorter/longer.
You may have some tissue pressure injury. Everyone says trainers are harder on the butt, because you don’t shift around as much. Have someone look at the area. What does it look like? Is it tender to touch. Do you have a boil?
Maybe you need to swim and run for a few days.
Try a neoprene cover.
Try a road bike to change the position little.
