My Aching Feet

I’ve got a problem, and could use some insight/advice. For the past couple of months, every time I get up from sitting (as at work) or from lying down, my feet hurt, especially for the first few steps. This is new for me (although I’ve had sore feet often during races, especially IMs or Ultras). It’s driving me crazy. As an aside, but perhaps related, during this year’s IM Canada, I found that my feet hurt more while walking than running. I guess the good news is that i made me run more than my tired, old body would have otherwise wanted. Anyway, any thoughts would be appreciated.

Sounds like you are developing plantar fasciatis. Be careful. You need to do lost of icing of the feet, stretching once the pain has subsided and no hills or speedwork while running for some time. Also ensure that your lower back, hamstrings , calves and achilles are well stretched and flexible

How’d you get PF diagnosis from what fexy01 said? - he/she didn’t even identify where the pain was located. Fexy, get the latest edition of “Fixing Your Feet”, try to identify specifically what your problem may be, or at least educate yourself on how the foot works, and then see a podiatrist or ortho doc soon.

It’s funny that you bring this up because I’m in the same boat! My foot kills me first thing in the AM when I get out bed or if I’ve been sitting around for a little while during the day. For some reason it does not hurt when I run but it’s getting worse after races/hard efforts.

Dev - Good job down in NC this past weekend! Any other thoughts on PF? Should I be heading straight to the podiatrist?

Thank you for the reply; I am trying to be better about working on my flexibility (always an issue for me). I have had PF before, and recall it painfully. This, however, is different. The main is more general, rather than specific to the plantar facia. I actually feel this discomfort more generally, and especially in the joints at distal (toe side) end of the metatarsals.

I just ordered Fixing Your Feet from Amazon this morning. Thanks for the recommendation.

I said, “sound like you are…”.

You are correct, he should see a podiatrist. His initial foot pains when getting up from sitting down or lying down sound like the same issues that people with PF face.

Larry, yes, see a podiatrist. Will you be racing at Westchester in 10 days ?

My last race of the season is this weekend in Dewey Beach, DE. so I won’t be at Westchester. Classes have just resumed for the fall semester so its back to the books and time to reduce my training. I was hoping to concentrate on running in the off-season so I better have this looked at pretty soon. I did some quick research and it sounds like the pain in my heel may be PF…in any case it’s better to get an expert opinion. Just out of curiosity, how long was your recovery from PF?

GJS: I’ll also check out the book.

Thanks!

Re the book: it is a good one to have at home on the shelf - even my daughter’s cc team is starting to get some use from it. I heard that the 3rd edition is out now, so I’d look for that.

Paul - sorry to sound cranky, need more morning coffee and less post-IMMOO soreness
