So I picked up a new car and it has an audio mute button. Best . . . invention . . . ever. How did I ever drive a car without it before!?! Can’t hear you kid in the back seat? Need to yell at the one kid hitting the other? Need to order at the drive-thru? Hit the mute button, do your thing, and then, boom, right back to the same audio level. No spinning the audio dial down or holding the down volume button and then turning it back up again. Whoever made the decision to put this button in my car, you are my hero. So simple, yet so genius.
Whilst I agree that it’s practical, I have never felt put out by having to turn the volume down and then back up.
You really need to get out more if you think the mute button is the best invention ever. Unless the button actually worked on the passengers so that you could hear the radio better. Now, that would be something.
The problem you may have is muting it, forgetting that you muted it, thinking you turned off the radio, “turning on” the radio, which actually turns it off and then having to turn it on again.
I can’t wait for The Cone of Silence.

Which car is it?
Anyone else like me? I have to turn off the radio if I’m backing up. Especially if I’m backing up a boat trailer. Apparently my SUV doesn’t go into reverse if the radio is on.
“Shhhhh. I can’t see.”
My wife had a 2003 Mazda 6, it had a mute button on the steering wheel, it was indeed quite handy. Also the stereo screen flashed MUTE when muted so no confusion as to the power status of the stereo.
I know, that spinning of the volume dial was pretty difficult, with the fraction of a second or so that it took.
That said, my car has a mute button, except that it’s labeled “on/off” instead. Works instantaneously.

Which car is it?
1979 AMC Pacer.

I was going to say,…
Like this is some sort of new-fangled function.
Yup. My 2004 civic has this handy feature. Press the volume knob to turn off the radio. Press it again and it comes back on at the same volume.
Forgot about that.
Technology!!!

I was waiting… and it was worth it!

Yet somehow never mutes Boheimian Rhaposody.

Yeah, but the on/off button shuts the whole infotainment system off.

Isn’t that the point?
It takes a few for the infotainment to reload, then it has to re-link the bluebooth audio. . . the mute button is just much more efficient. Your raining on my parade, why can’t you just accept the awesomeness of the mute button ![]()
You forget this is the LR, where no parade goes un-rained upon. I will now probably catch grief for ending a sentence with a preposition.
8 track or cassette?
I apparently can turn off the radio volume via voice command. The voice commands in my car absolutely fucking suck. The stupid german lady (who doesn’t even sound german, but would be way cooler if she did) will respond with something like “please speak destination” or something else totally off. When I do try to use her for nav, it also doesn’t work.
I can hit the radio volume button once to drop the sound though, but I’ve never done it. I also have a button on the steering wheel that can apparently be programmed to do this kinda thing. I haven’t been bothered to program it though.
My old car had a Sony in-dash I installed that had a 1/3 or 1/4 or something sound button. I really liked that. Cut the sound down substantially if needed. Used that a lot in heavy fast moving traffic if the radio was too loud to concentrate.
