Apparently, there’s a place on Bear St. called Banff-Poutine that claims to have authentic Quebec-style poutine
**Do they give you a bunch of attitude if you don’t speak French? **
I’d also say Quebec has its fair share of creperies. Not sure about the rest of Canada, but mini might like something like that.
One can only hope…
I was in Mont Tremblant last summer and pretended to be German in shops so the staff wouldn’t give me a hard time about being a bad canadian anglophone who didn’t speak French.
I’ve seen and experienced the stick-up-the-ass Frenchies who give Anglos a hard time, but rarely in a touristy area… they typically know where their bread is buttered… The worst seem to be government employees, in my experience…
Honestly - I don’t know that there’s anything super-duper-extra-cool here. Banff is expensive and touristy - but since you are tourists, it will be fun.
One thing that might be available is a pastry treat called a Beaver Tail… look it up.
This.
Anything else considered “Canadian cuisine” is basically just American (or maybe some other country’s) food of one type or another done a little worse because it’s so cold and desolate up there.

I grew up in Southern Indiana and I have been putting ketchup on my potato chips since I was in 2nd grade. Also, someone mentioned mayonnaise on fries, that is the best way to eat fries. Poutine in Montreal is great, Canadian bacon is a round piece of fat, grilled.
And I don’t know about Canada but when Burger King and Tim Horton’s merged, the US version of Tim Horton’s went to shit.
I just came back from Vancouver Island for my fourth work trip up there in a year’s time and these are some of my favorites that I can remember:
-Kit Kat caramel crisp and Cadbury Wunderbar chocolate bars. I don’t usually care for chocolate or many candies, but these were heckin’ great and I probably had one a day after work. Oh Henry and Crispies also get honorable mentions.
-I really liked poutine, but some were great and some were dogshit. Ask the locals where to go.
-Kokanee is okay but skip Lucky beer.
-All dressed Lays chips.
-Tim Horton’s coffee was a huge disappointment, but fresh Tim Bits are great! I loved getting Timmy’s in Abu Dhabi/Dubai when I lived there, but I think it’s worse than Dunkin Donuts in Canada. McDonalds coffee is still number one for me.
Have fun on your trip! I fell in love with Vancouver Island and will absolutely go back when I get a chance. I really hope to visit Kelowna on mainland BC some time after hearing so many good things about the place from coworkers.
What about that Kinder egg thingy that you can’t get in the states (IIRC)?
Oh yes - of course!! Definitely get a kinder egg. You can get the small version and a giant version. It’s very hit and miss with the toys, but it’s kind of fun.
If you have a car, Canmore may be a good option for food. A little less touristy than Banff but may have a lot more chain restaurants. I think it’s a 20-30 minute drive.
I had amazing Greek food in Revelstoke at Zalas Pizza and Steak House, but that was eight years ago so no idea if it’s still any good. I introduced my Mum to saganaki (flaming cheese) - it was a fun meal!

Not that I’m admitting to anything- but mini has had a few kinder eggs over the years…

The boys chose kinder eggs on our way to the US one year. We jokingly told them to throw out all the evidence before the border.
It’s like Salt and vinegar, BBQ and Sour Cream and Onion all mixed together.
We can get these in Maine - the Humpty Dumpty brand (which might actually be Canadian now; they used to be made in Maine). I love them. I might have described it as s&V, bbq, and ketchup, and sour cream and onion. That’s what’s on the Humpty Dumpty bag.
