I’m pale, and burn quite badly. I’ve gotten smarter over the years- sunblock, ball cap (too thin to effectively block the sun up top), etc. Dermatology class has made me want to take it a step further- see pic. That’s the color too. My wife tells me I’m way too young to pull it off- 32. I think she just doesn’t want to be seen with what might be mistaken for an old codger. Maybe a lighter color, but that’s about it.
I say lack of sunburn trumps her fashion sense anyhow. What say the fashion mavens of the LR?
Unless you favor the Indiana Jones look, there are a world of possibilites at REI. Take your wife, and with each hat look at her and see if she laughs.
OK, gimme some other suggestions- I’d like my ears to be covered. Take a look around the transition area this summer in the 40+ age groups- there are some fried-looking ears out there, and some funky spots on the scalps of the thin-haired set.
No REI here, but there’s got to be one someplace between here and Kansas- she’ll acquiesce to anything just to get back on the road and not stop at every outdoor store for 750 miles…
can you post a pic of yourself so i can make some suggestions that will suit your style?
it is hard to know if you can do that hat or not, i don’t know what you look like…
i don’t think the hat is “awful”, but it’s not cool either. the dude in the pic is handsome, but…much older than you. if he wasn’t so handsome he might look pretty dorky.
if you have an everyday pic of yourself (NOT A RACE PIC PLEASE), that will help. otherwise, think about a cowboy hat. most men look pretty damn good in them, IMO. i’ll search around, maybe post a link.
meanwhile, check out www.hatcountry.com there are straw hats, wool felt hats, and a good selection. maybe your lady can help you pick on. (BTW, wool can be surprisingly breathable)
Hopefully this does the trick. I fully admit to looking like a dork, but I’m married w/ 2 little kids- the epitomie of dorkdom. Wouldn’t have it any other way!
I dunno- for some reason those don’t appeal to me, nor do the cowboy hats (for KC- those are in the ABSOLUTELY NOT category).
Some structure, but not out of control, shades the ears…
This could work, but just doesn’t hold the appeal of the other:
If it was just cutting the lawn, I’d dig up my old DCU hat and cut the rank off, but I want something I can wear to the zoo, kids’ games, out doing whatever.
Tilley has a range of styles - not sure if it’s because this one is on an older guy, but this style looks a little “Older”. Tilley’s are great hats. I have always liked the orginal Tilley hat - it has a bit of a younger look.
You are right, to really do face and head sun protection right you need the full brim.
I suggested something along those lines to my wife, “You know like your uncle wears”. He’s mid-late 40’s retired Air Force. She claims that it’s 40+ territory.
We live 3/4 of a mile from clothing sales. In another year, it’ll be back to the “1 weekend a month, 2 weeks a year (*not including deployments)” mode- I’d like to have something that blends w/ regular folk.
I have one of both of those and many more. I am always in search fo the perfect hat. Think about temperature in the summer. Needs a lot of vents. The kind like the 1st one in your picture gets really hot.
