J-mo HR needs to post more and somehow may the link between HR and Richard Paddy :-). Then only can we realize who is who and give him the requisite all important ST glory.
Markus, too bad about the Peterborough run. I liked the open, hot windy shadeless and desolate nature of the old course.
yeah, I thought you would be sad about the run changing. It was a real mental test running out to the turnaround seeing all the folks running back in. And those hills really made it great run. But I can see why they would change it.
Too bad though.
Hey Mike, sorry I missed you, I didn’t see you at all over the weekend.
It was definately fun cheering her on, thanks for asking about her!
She really enjoyed being out there and said she had a good ride, even complained about running out of gears on one section. I think we’ll hold off on putting the 55 tooth chainring on but she obviously handled the bike OK on the hilly course.
She’s looking forward to the next race, it’s fun to be able to share stories with one another after our respective races.
Are you racing Peterborough, we’ll have to chat then.
Ian

Dev,
It was like running in India! I recall pleasent runs in the Tarai along farm roads in the countryside not unlike that around Peterborough. Only difference was that in India it was in the 40’sC!!
Hey Mike, that is a good plan. Let’s lobby Mitch for a front runner age grouper wave for folks who are not competing for slots of age group awards. That would be fine. The reality is that anyone who is going to get a slot will get a slot. Even in the same wave, the 30 min swimmer is not doing the same race as a 40 min swimmer, what really is the difference in starting the top 75-100 amateurs in one wave? I agree about masters dudes slingshotting to faster times, on most courses, but on this course, it was more like ride the brakes every few minutes or take out an older/younger competitor who started early (thus my “apology” further up). If women 40-49 starts after men 40-44, this situation is instantly avoided
Dev,
I’m glad to hear your swim observation, I too took a minute off from last years time but I was still a little disappointed and thought I’d be a little faster.
Had a couple of deer jump cross the the road in front of me on the bike, I think it was on the South Portage section, that was pretty cool although it was almost a little too close for comfort!
The Bike was a little crowded, I swam in the second wave and was out in a little over 32 minutes but found that there was a lot of traffic for the first 20km.
I passed a few people and got passed by some but it spread out once I turned on South Portage Rd.
Since it was my first time I was happy to survive the bike without blowing out and having enough to shuffle home and finish #246 overall.
It really is a great race and I look forward to Peterborough as my longest race ever.
Ha ha, now you know how I feel coming out of the geezer’s wave right before the Clydes and Athenas and then having to navigate past some weak-kneed descenders where I’m going +15mph and three b… I mean women - are easin’ on down the road side by side!!
Everybody gets tense when there’s a high-speed pass and there’s not much that’s worse than having to go to your brakes because there isn’t room to pass when two or more people are side by side in violation of the rules. On the up-side, maybe your outburst gave the moron who wouldn’t yield a little something to think about.
There are usually either too many or not enough officials. Two years ago at Treasure Island (a REAAAALLLLLY flat course) I passed over 600 riders and got passed by six. Somehow an official tagged me for blocking!! I couldn’t argue with him afterwards because I was so hoarse from shouting “ON YOUR FRIGGIN’ LEFT,” and “GET OUT OF THE GODAM WAY,” that it hurt to breathe. Race marshalls are like cops, there’s never one around when you need one, but they somehow manage to be there when you screw up. Worst thing about that race was the 3:00 blocking penalty cost me 2nd place.
And you got to 3rd (congrats brother) by doing it right. There are no awards for first into T1 or T2, the awards are at the finish line, and a steady race gets you there fastest.
Totally agree btw, on mass start races. The 101 was awesome, because it’s the first time I’ve ever been able to draft for three-fourths of a race. Probably could have swum faster, but I got out of the water just a few minutes down to the top AGers without ever getting my HR out of zone 1!!
Len Gushe is incredible. I’ve watched him the last 2 years after coming back from the hamstring surgery and he looks amazing. You’ve got to give some props to the doctor that fixed him up (my friend Dr. Ron V - unfortunately not on ST).
What an experience!
I did the long course du last year, but this was my first triathlon other than a sprint last year. I was (obviously) most terrified of the swim and it lived up to expectations. It seemed as though everyone in my AG (25-29) was hanging out on the side of the start line and I ended up way too far to the front. Expecting to be in around 40mins (which despite all my troubles ended beating by a few seconds) I needless to say got swum all over at the beginning. I made my way to the outside and hung out there by myself, and had major goggle issues, my right eye being in a pool of water, forcing me stop a couple times to adjust them.
The bike was awesome for me, despite the hills and gearing issues (ya I neglected making the proper adjustments after posting about it last week) I still did pretty good. I had a good chuckle at all the yellow aero bottle sponge things on the road, til I lost mine on Britannia…
The run is where I was disappointed. I ran a 5:00 pace, and only because I ended up dehydrated and cramped up around 10km, forcing me to walk for a few minutes and walk through a couple aid stations.
Many lessons learned and I also look forward to Peterborough! And I’ll be in this age group for 5 more years so I can move my way up for sure!
Ha ha, now you know how I feel coming out of the geezer’s wave right before the Clydes and Athenas and then having to navigate past some weak-kneed descenders where I’m going +15mph and three b… I mean women - are easin’ on down the road side by side!!
OK - so maybe yer only up to “Dev speed” on the run but ya gotta be pleased w/ the improvement!!
Dang, NP 310 watts? I can do that too… for about 20 minutes.
What’s next on the sked?
Too bad yer not doing Tupper Lake, I coulda grabbed yer wetsuit zipper leash and barefoot waterskiied behind you, I woulda set a new swim PB for sure
it was a fun race. my first time to canada, and i enjoyed it. i had a pretty mediocre race, but finished 2nd in 20-24 (3:11) and got my IM Florida slot, so i’m happy.
very well run race, great volunteers. will most likely be back next year.
anyone have any inside scoop on why this guy got DQ’d?

Glad you enjoyed yourself and had a great time. Please tell your friends and invite them to come next year. We are a bit spoiled in these parts. Believe it or not, their is a race of this quality or close to it in Southern Ontario almost every weekend from early June to mid Sept!
Hey dev, great race. That was my wife and I cheering at the bike turn around (about 12km in). Its pretty crazy how bunched up people are that early on in the race.
That’s you heading towards us still in your aero bars, and the people going away are the ones who have just done the turn-around.
another one, a little closer
Here’s a picture of Mike Coughlin… clearly not pushing hard enough to smile like that
Well, there you have the evidence of the closing differentials. In picture 1, I am several meters behind the rider sitting up on the hoods…next frame, I am passing him pulling into the turnaround and I am yelling at the girl in pink to pedal out of the turn so she does not literally fall over. She braked so hard that I thought she might not even make it out of the turn upright!
