I’m interested in doing this race because the location is kind of close and looks like it will be a great race and I love the area. My question is this.
Do you think the bike course will be a Draft fest with so many competitors like the clearwater race last year.?
I think it depends on the cap. Personally, I think anything above 1200 and they will have major issues. I assume it will be wave starts so if they stagger those waves significantly it might not be too bad.
I think they are planning on 1500 tp start (don’t know the waves). I know they have already sold over 1000 spots. The bike course (that area in general) is hilly which will split things up somewhat. The Muskokas is a beautiful area and the Race Organizer already runs the largest series around (Subaru) so it should be a good well run race.
The course will be nothing like Clearwater, from what I can tell. The cycling in the Muskoka area is on constantly rolling hills. Not big hills but it seems you are always going up or down. It’s similar to the IMWisco bike course except with pine trees on the side of the road and not corn fields
I suspect that it will be wave starts and if they get the waves right, with the right gaps, the traffic on the bike course should not be a big problem.
Trisport puts on another race in Muskoka in June - the Muskoka Chase, that is run over a 2K/50K/15K course. It typically has about 1000 people entered with wave starts. The bike course is challenging and to the best of my knowledge, drafting is not an issue in that race.
Having officiated on the Muskoka bike course (long from this year but only the pros and front age groupers) the problem back in the mop was blocking not drafting. There seems to be a greater problem with racers being more than 1m from the edge of the road when climbing these days.
I lost my voice on the short course yelling “on your left” this year people were all over the road.

No problem at Calabogie though!
Being that the race is close to hunting season, and being north of “7” they might have made a deal with the hunters to take care of the drafting situation
