Muscle recruitment

I read an article in Triathlete mag by Chris Lieto about doing super low rbm hill repeats (like 50 to 60 rpms) anyone have experience or success with this type of training?

This could be a real strenght builder (if your knees don’t blow).

I do it once per week all winter on the trainer. It sucks.

Wow I just checked out your blog…so how did you get on the Timex team? I am a competitive age grouper with 2 overall wins last year and several top 10’s so I would definately appreciate your training successes. How long do you go typically when you do these efforts?

I have no idea how I got on the team, to tell you the truth! I’m not all that fast. One overall win in a small race, a couple top 10 overalls in some non M-dot Halfs, top 10 AG at Steelhead. It’s all about marketing…

This year my big build is about 3 weeks but I have some easy days (like today when I just ran 4 miles since I’m traveling). In the past it has been about 10 really really tough days ending about a week before my first half. It has worked well for me every year so far.

I think the best advice for getting on a team or getting sponsorship is to just put yourself out there. Get a blog, get active in the local and national tri-scene and don’t be afraid to meet a lot of new people. And most importantly, keep a positive attitude about the sport.

Good luck!

You know, that’s not at all unlike how I really do climb hills…albeit the super steep, out-of-the-saddle kind.

I also have a theory that I’d bike and even run better if I brought my RPMs down from my usual 90-95. So far it’s not natural feeling to spin 85 rpms, but I’m going to start to train my body that way and see how I like it. Low RPM, high-torque training sessions can help me develop that.
