Muncie words of wisdom

Doing Muncie HIM for the first time (done other HIMs) - any tips/tricks/words of wisdom to be aware of? BTW - looking like we may get some awesome weather - i.e. not low 90s with humidity.

Keep the rubber side down, good luck and see you in Indiana.

Get there early enough to rack in the correct spot, like BIGZACH…

The word you’re looking for is DUMPSTER!
.

I aged up this year and looked forward to going off in the 2nd wave this year vs the last one. It can be a long wait if you’re in the last waves. Literally people are heading out on the bike 5-10 mins before the last waves are even in the water. The last two legs of the swim are a challenge because you will be blinded some by the sun. On the last leg in sight the ambulance parked on the beach. They will have the lights flashing.

Bike is flat but you’ll have wind. It has been a closed course for years on state roads. First section is on a bike to rails trail…very very fast, be careful when passing.

The most common thing I hear from first timers at Muncie is the run is harder than expected. Not much shade out there. You may luck out with the weather. But it just would not be the same Muncie without heat, wind and humidity!

Best organized and well run race year in and year out. My favorite.

Tip: Get to the transition area early and I would head into the venue from the east side of the lake. Folks coming in on the west side can get sit in traffic. Parking lot area always seems to get full no matter the year.

DUMPSTER!!!

I just got back from Muncie ( I live with my parents now further north in Indiana)…we did a 4.5 hr ride today and the average temp for the ride was 93 degrees…then my friend rode beside me as I did about an hour brick run…average temperature was 96 degrees for the run!!!..

Its a flat easy bike course and a rolling hilly run with little shade…so if its hot like today, well thats when you never admit to your body that you are burning up and keep downing the fluids…then when you get to the Medical tent…then you can admit to yourself its really hot…BRING THE HEAT!!!

Good luck buddy. I am pulling for you. I went riding with your boy dan prater. the muncie guys are hilarious.

“Dumpster” originated in Kirks Bike shop, way before I was in Muncie, when all 4 Praters, BIGADAM, and Seth Wealing (the real fast Xterra guy) were probably all working htere at the same tijme
.

The good ol days working at the shop with the praters… fun times back then!

This weekend the weather is looking awesome, high 70’s should be a huge relief! Water is warm these days, but I am not too sure what the little cold front will do, but I expect it to be around 80. Same course as in the past. The big difference is the addition of a sprint. The sprint will go off while the long course athletes are on the bike and should be done by the time Shanahan gets back from the bike. Things are ready to go. The run always seems to kill people, rolling hills, very, very little shade. We have great support each mile at the aid stations which should help out. Gatorade, water, cold towels, pretzels, flat coke, Hammer Gel, Endurolytes every mile. We are looking forward to a great race. Come introduce yourself.

And yes, rack your bike in the correct spot…l
