Mtn bike pedal clearance: Eggbeater v. Other brands

I recently changed to Eggbeaters and I’m am finding that my pedals often hit objects at the bottom of the pedalstroke.

I am riding a new trail due to a recent relocation, so I cannot definitively say that the pedal change is the cause. The distance of the relocation prevents me from going back to my original course to compare.

I am asking for your input about the eggbeater… Does it extend farther (lower) than other systems such as Time Atac or SPD?

The eggbeater is a pretty slim pedal, not much thicker than an SPD, probably about the same as the ATAC. What you may find is that if you do plant your pedal on a rock because all the springs are connected you will release your foot if you hit it hard enough. I was at a mtn bike race today and for the umpteenth time another competitors eggbeater broke and so you couldn’t clip in on any of the 4 sides. I have been using the Look Quartz pedal for the last few months and love it, light weight, great mudclearance and if one side breaks you can still clip in on the other side. They are taller than others but piece of mind come into play alot more than all the problems that I have seen with the eggbeaters.

Since I run Crank Bros on all my other bikes - I just put eggbeaters on my MTB despite having depended on
Time pedals for 3-4 years. I think I am hitting my pedals less through the rock gardens since the swap and
haven’t noticed any problems clipping in and clipping out, so it has mostly worked out.

HOWEVER - this weekend I did bash them on a rock at speed this weekend and trashed one. They are way flimsier
than the SPD or Time pedals I have used in the past since I have never bent any of the other pedals. I was probably
doing less than 20mph in some singletrack and clipped a rock hidden in some tall grass… not exactly ‘abuse’

I’ll probably replace the Eggbeaters with the Candys…I do like being able to swap pedals and shoes between bikes
without having to worry about cleats. But if you ride in rocky areas you may want to consider something with a little
more body around the axle.

Thank you guys for your input.

The only reason I ever noticed my eggbeaters hitting was that they popped me out of the pedals since the bails are attached. I hated them. I hit stuff now, but since I never get popped out, I don’t really notice.

While I “like” my egg beaters and have only broken one (bearings)…I really like the feel of the Time quite a bit better, they are about as “thick” as the egg beaters however.
