Who wears MTB shoes when riding their road/tri bike? For most riding, it seems like MTB shoes would be safer for walking and also better protect the cleats.
I wear them on my commuter bike…which is basically a cross bike. Much more comfy walking around in them.
I do. I’ve done thousands of miles on my road bike with this set up and never had a problem. I’m new to tris, but the one I have done worked out well - I just put the shoes on and ran the bike through transition. I’ve ridden clipless for years, but the though of trying to put my shoes on while riding the bike just seems like a crash waiting to happen to me…
I’m using SIDI dominators and SPD pedals.
Actually, I race in Nike Pedali’s. Pretty funny but I like 'em better than my old Avia tri shoes. Give it a try if snarky comments from others bounce off your back like Gaggioli’s waterbottle.
I do it on my commuter. I hate trying to stop at hte grocery store in LOOK cleats.
I’ve done it, and will again.
In fact, I did my first 5 tri’s in mtb shoes (Sidi dominator 2’s, we’re talking old-school relics, that just won’t die), and they worked just fine. In fact, for one of the venues (which I’ve done 2x, a local sprint tri), the TA is in a parking lot that is dirt and Item 4, so for that the mtb shoes are actually much better, since Sidi road shoes are a f’n disaster to try to walk or run in, even on flat surfaces.
You may be scoffed at by style purists (although after that bungled tape job, I’m not worried much about what Gopha hasta say any more ;-), but the best revenge is to ride hard and drop them. For full effect, don’t shave your legs either.
- disclaimer - I mostly use my road shoes on the road bike these days. But, I still refuse to shave my legs.
