I talked to a shop owner that’s trying to find out if there’s any interest in doing a combo mtb/road bike race. Something like a 25mile mtb or cross, transitioning to a 40-50mile road course. Anyone heard of or done anything similar?
There have been numerous Paris-Roubaix knock offs: Boulder-Roubaix and the Saturn Classic in Colorado, Mt Humboldt RR here in Arizona, but nothing quite like what you have in mind I think. The closest was the Saturn, which forced many guys to switch bikes a couple of times throughout the ride.

Why transition?
As said above…there are many races around the country which are basically off-road/fireroad/gravel road USCF “road races”. They are a blast too!!!
I think it would be interesting to have a course with road, dirt track and true mtb. You could switch bikes or just ride one. I would like to see how the strategy enters into it.

back a few years ago in green bay a local guy promoted "The Ultimate Biker ". there was a 30 K mtb ike race on singletrack, a transition to a 40K road section, and then back to the singletrack. it was a huge success, and lots of guys were sad went the guy quit doing it. it was cool. fun strageties played out.
Some relay events like Ski to Sea in Bellingham, Wa. or the Big Hurt in Port Angeles, have both road and Mt. bike legs. I think The Big Hurt has an Iron division, not sure about Ski to Sea.
One year I made it a goal to race in at least one of the possible bike event categories. Problem was, it got murky as to how many possible categories you could have, ie., I bogged down when people reminded me of Trials, Dual Slalaom, Downhill, Tandem etc. For what it’s worth, I ended up (in a calendar year) competing in at least one of the following: Road Race, TT, Mt. Bike, Cross, Track, and Crit.
